Diesel for short runs?

Featured Replies

the new 1.6d wouldnt mind it too much. My supervisor does a daily trip of 2 miles and his golf bluemotion doesnt play up

The thing about it costing more in the long run I find hard to believe. My vrs derv does about 3 miles a day plus the odd trip at weekend etc and im saving £120 a month minimum over my civic which did the same mpg as the petrol vrs

That seems a huge saving considering your hardly using the car? I do about 1200miles a month and spend approx £230 on fuel (petrol vrs using super unleaded) . The mileage you said your doing (3 miles a day over 5 days? ...therefore 60 miles a month plus a bit extra at the weekend) I would expect to only use a tank or so over a month . Worst I've had from mine from a tank was 280 miles which was mostly all short journies/hard driving (was alot worse on track but that is an exception). How can you save £120 a month then?

No DPF problems with the 140pd Scout, which has mainly been used for short runs especially in winter.

I have run it almost exclusively on Ultimate for the last 2 years (not sure I would if it wasn't for the 6p a litre discount I get)

At the last service I had the ash content of the DPF checked - 9g (max60g) so plenty of life left.

I've probably been very lucky and dont think I would risk another DPF diesel.

With my previous car (civic vti-s) the mpg was so awful it would go through a tank a week. Obviously we were using it to make other trips aswell as the short runs to work.

Now with the octavia im filling it up once every 2 weeks if not less.

The last tank was 2 weeks ago tomorrow and in those 2 weeks we went to crewe and back, trips to work, plus trips totaling about 100 miles on top of that. Ended up at 460 miles from the tank which imo isnt bad with 10 days of 3 mile trips and its running a stage 1 map
