7.1.1 IoS update on an iPhone 5

Featured Replies

Hello there:

I was recently given an iPhone 5 from my boss, nice of her I know.

It hasn't been updated to 7.1

Just wondering if it is worth updating to the newer iOS , as I have mixed reviews from friends with iPhones, I am told that the older iPhones, such as the 4 and 4s are not really powerful enough to cope with the 7.1 upgrade ?

Will my iPhone 5 be okay with the upgrade?

My wife and I both have iOS 7.1.1 on our iPhone 4Ss. You iPhone 5 should be more than OK with that upgrade.

Go for it.

You won't struggle, I guess it's on 7 already, I noticed no difference in running when updating from 7 a 7.1.1

The smaller 'point' updates shouldn't make any difference to performance and are usually bug fixes or security updates to it's generally a good idea to keep up to date with these. You're right in that some of the older models won't be as quick with newer versions of iOS (or will only run older versions/or more recent but with limits to some features) but as mentioned above your iPhone 5 will be fine and should run the next couple of major releases no problem.

4S is fine too, it's only the 4 that you'll notice being not quite as snappy and the odd feature isn't enabled. The 4 is perfectly usable with iOS 7 though. 3GS is getting a bit long in the tooth now and isn't compatible with 7 at all.

Mine is running 7.1.1 and it runs as fast as I ever has on any other ios version.

If your phone or iPad is running okay don't upgrade if not broken don't mess with coz there are problems with the new iOS software I wish I didn't upgrade my iPad my keyboard is slow and I can't have wallpapers or screensavers cause it just keeps zooming in and the only way to fix down load a app just more hassle than it's worth.

Dan, which iPad do you have and what version of iOS did you upgrade to?

The phone was previously on ios 6
It handles the newupdate brilliantly - lots of new features on this update compared with the older version, very impressed if I am honest,
Thanks for the advice everybody.
Sorry to hear about your experience Dan :/
I have heard similar stories from other people.

iPad 3 it started on iOS 7.0.1 and still playing up on 7.1.1

The 3rd gen iPad's pretty quick - it shouldn't have any bother running the latest iOS version so it sounds like something's not right. You might have tried this already, but if not, try backing up in iTunes and restoring. If you still have trouble after it's restored from your backup then try restoring it as a new device and check if any of the issues are persisting. If it's still giving you bother after that then there may be some kind of hardware issue, but hopefully it's just been some glitch during the update and a restore will sort it.

Also, the 'zooming in' may just be an accessibility feature that's been turned on - double tapping with three fingers turns it on or off, but you can disable it in Settings > General > Accessibility > Zoom.

I've done all of that and luck I restored it from an old backup but I'm still having problems with the keyboard and I can't change my wallpaper or screensaver I have read some people with iPhone 5 and s and with new iPads having the same trouble.

That's a nuisance, if it is a bug then hopefully will be sorted in the next update. If it's still not working after a clean restore then might be worth a try visiting the Genius Bar if you have an Apple Store nearby (book a reservation, they're busy). If it's still in warranty (or not too far out), then they might swap to rule out hardware issues. Hope you get it sorted out.

It's a software problem coz in the last update the keyboard was mentioned its out of warranty I'll wait for ios8 won't be long coz the new iPhone shouldn't be long I hope.

Forgot to say - might not make any difference in this case but maybe worth a try if you haven't already. Restore in DFU mode:

  • Connect to iTunes
  • Hold both the lock/power and home buttons for 8 seconds
  • Let go of the lock button and keep holding home
  • iPad should boot in recovery mode (screen may stay black)
  • Restore as normal when prompted

Ios 8 is on apple website to look at and coming out in the fall lets hope it's more reliable then ios 7.
