Its a re-badged Megane with some plastic bits. VAG posted three cars in the top 10 of the latest JD Power survey including 1st and 2nd, Nissan 0. Renault 0 (best placed 45th out of 116).

The sentiment isn't anti-Japanese car maker who launched its Infiniti brand at the same time VAG was starting to accrue marques, its about the anodyne styling and questionable base, nothing astounding or hilarious in that. 

Not by 20-some years. Vw AG bought Auto-Union (and hence Audi, DKW, Horch, and Wanderer) in 1965. Infiniti was invented in 1989.

 It was more a response to the claim about brand engineering- VAG began spreading its wings in 95 when it acquired Skoda (SEAT was a means to a political ends) and went on from there. Were it a case of mergers then Austin would have the Germans beaten hands down. I'd certainly argue there is a difference between mere acquisition and brand engineering (Audi 50 or VW Polo as example). Nissan also beat VAG to the 'luxury' punch by separating out Inifiniti right from the off, similar to Toyota and Honda. In 95 VW and Audi were still being flogged by the same salesman..
