The only thing that puzzles me is that the car has a spoiler at the rear, looks like a genuine skoda item but I'm sure it shouldn't be there?

That has almost certainly been added by a previous owner. It's probably a genuine Skoda spoiler from a vRS.

Hmm, doesn't tie in with the 'owned by an old man' story. Tempted to go for a fabia vrs if only for the tried and tested 1.9 lump but I want the better refinement of the Octavia.

As an owner of both an Octavia and Fabia, I would recommend you keep looking for an Octavia, it's miles ahead of the Fabia in every respect.

The 1.9 TDI is fitted to the Octavia too.......even in L&K trim.

I test drove a Jetta TDI today, unfortunately it has the BMM engine with a DPF but the car itself was lovely!  The Octavia I was referring to in this thread is still for sale (not sure if that should set alarm bells ringing, but I guess it is expensive for what it is?). I've tried to find some petrol examples to drive but the only thing locally is a tfsi vrs!
