2007 Fabia (57) L&K advice please?

Featured Replies

Hey all,

Went and looked over a 2007 Octy l&k today! Car has 53000 on the clock, full skoda service history and had the cambelt done in 2012. Just wondering if there is anything I need to pay particular attention to on these cars? I currently have a 2.2 I-ctdi Civic, and the VW engine sounded very agricultural compared to the civic lump but I believe that's just a trait of the VW lump?

Can you advise me whether this car would have a DPF? I'm trying to avoid buying anything that has one! I'm going to test drive the car tomorrow when the weather is dry and I can actually inspect the paintwork properly!

Thanks for any help :)

Edit : Epic fail on the topic title! Could someone please correct it!

Sorted

DPF was only on VRS or Scout/4x4 pre 2009.

If it is 2007 and diesel it will be a PD engine and yes they do sound agricultural compared to common rail diesels like your Civic.

I can't see an edit button! Perhaps I'm blind :(

Is the 2.0PD unit any less reliable than the 1.9? My previous 1.9 was faultless for many thousands of miles, just trying to get something similar!

Thanks :)

the tractor noise is normal for a PD engine :giggle:  , there are no real problems with PD140 as main unreliability issues lies with the PD170 VRS which has different type of injectors and has a DPF.

the 1.9PD will do better mpg but not as nippy as the 2.0PD

The 2.0 PD has proven itself to be very reliable in 140bhp form......I'd say as reliable as the 1.9 PD. You may read about oil pump failures in 2.0 PD engines, but this only affected balance shaft driven oil pumps on early Superb's, never on the Octavia.

I have both engines (1.9 in the fabia, 2.0 in the Octavia) and the 2.0 is more refined than the 1.9 and considerably faster. The 1.9 is significantly more economical (although it is in a smaller car).

As a L&K owner myself, I would advise you check a few L&K specific items. Namely that the auto dimming mirrors work.....especially the external ones as replacement auto dimming glass for the external mirrors costs around £200 a side.....although I think on 2007 models onwards they didn't fit an auto dimming mirror on the passenger side. Also check the reverse mirror dip function works.....Select the Left mirror with the adjuster on the drivers door and select reverse gear. The passenger mirror should dip down. It won't return to normal until you drive forward at 10 mph or more. Also check both heated seats work.......my car has suffered failures with heated seat (broken element) and auto dipping mirror (memory motor has malfunctioned).

Thank you for all your replies gents! Would 7600 be a reasonable price for one with 50k on the clock? I realise they are probably cheaper up the line, but cars down here have a nasty habit of being expensive anyway!

Assuming the car is still there tomorrow I'll take it for a test drive if possible :) Will check the reverse mirror movement and the seats for heat! The 2.0PD if reliable is fantastic, almost tempted by a little remap but don't want to ruin that reliability! The civic unfortunately has a chocolate clutch so remapping is pretty much a no no!

Thank you for your time :)

Just had a quick look on autotrader nationally, and it seems a 2007 L&K with circa 50,000 miles can be had for around £6500 for a hatch and around £7000 for an estate. So it would seem that the example you have found is a little overpriced. Buy it may be worth it if it is in absolutely mint condition.

Of course the other thing to look out for is signs of dual mass flywheel failure, and in an Octavia of this vintage, look at the sills for signs of stone chips that have gone rusty. Good luck!

Again thank you :)

Out of interest, do the octavias of this age have independent suspension? My civic has the blessed torsion bar of old French cars! I'd like something far more comfortable than my Civic and I believe the Octavia fits the bill nicely :) I couldn't hear any untoward noises when I started it today, I assume DMF failure would produce a rattle or odd vibration like noise?

I have heard that the 2.0 pd140's can be prone to turbo failures as well, particularly if mapped but it doesn't seem to come up here too often.

Air con would also be a good check as they have compressors made of cheese.

Again thank you :)

Yes all octavias mk2 have independent suspension and handle pretty well stock.

Yes, it may make a rattle at idle, but it may not. Assuming it's a manual accelerate and get it in 3rd or 4th gear and put your foot down from low rpm....1500rpm or so. A failing DMF may knock or judder when you do this.

The Octavia rides very nicely, although personally I find examples fitted with 17" wheels and bigger start getting a bit harsh in the ride department. Mine's got 16" wheels and it is fine.

I bought a 2.0TDI L&K with above average external condition (stone chips on front and side which I am getting fixed), 120K odd miles with service history although from independent garage. The car drives very smooth but having read some horror stories with turbos, DMF, clutch failures etc...I am in two minds how long to keep it for now. I have not read any negative reviews on parkers or autrotrader but it seems people prefer 1.9tdi v the 2.0tdi on here.

I have always bought Japanese petrols before...this is the first diesel I have bought....

Don't worry about it. Any car can break at any time. At 120k miles it may have already had a replacement flywheel.

Personally I think the 2.0tdi is pretty much as reliable as the 1.9tdi.  I have one of each and the 2.0tdi is certainly nicer to drive.

Yes I really like my 2.0 TDi. The 2 litre PD got plenty of bad press due to the crappy BKP version that was fitted to the VW Passat, but really other than an engine block it doesn't have much in common with the BKD version used in the Octavia which is far more reliable - no piezo injectors, DPF or balancer shaft to fail.

thanks for the reassurance guys...eased my concerns slightly    :)

I just need to get few niggles sorted out (which I completely missed on test drive) air con not blowing cold and that seat belt sensor issue...which for some reason I thought was for the rear passenger as the guy sitting on the rear seat was not wearing the seat belt during the test drive...going to unplug the connector for now as it is soooo annoying.

Apart from those niggles...everything else seems good for now...everyone I have shown the car loved the leather upholstery.

Also is there a way to turn off the headlights whilst driving?

Air con needs a regas

Seat belt sensor can be disabled in VCDS or otherwise replaced!

Nice cars IMO

So the headlights are on all the time regardless of switch position? This could be a faulty switch/auto light sensor or someone may have activated a daytime running light mode with VCDS.

Hopefully the aircon just needs a regas........it is possible the compressor has failed which is expensive, but presumably the garage you bought it from would carry out this work.

As Toxicvrs says, they are very nice cars with some features that are not available on any other trim level Octavia.

Yes that's right the lights remain on...unless I move the switch to the side lights. On the off position the lights remain on all the time whilst driving.

I do however think the diesel car is more suited to the motorway and I make lots of small daily journeys...so unless I will be travelling for work regularly I may have to look at a petrol in 6 months time but I needed a car desperately as my old Civic 1.4 is having some issues after 6 years of faithful service and 134k on the clock.

Out of interest, at the sort of age I went to look at (57) what extras does L&K bring? I assume the half leather/alcantara seats aren't normal?

Someone has activated the daytime running lights (DRL's).

This can only be done using VCDS or the dealers software. There are two different settings for the pre-facelift MkII...

Scandinavian: Ignition on = headlights, sidelights, tail lights and number plate lights - ON.

North American: Ignition on and handbrake off = headlights and side lights (only) - ON.

As for the faulty seat belt warning and duff A/C don't touch anything. Take it back to the dealer and ask them to sort if free of charge for you.

Yes that's right the lights remain on...unless I move the switch to the side lights.

In that case I would echo what silver1011 said......it's had one of the DRL modes activated.

Yes, the features you specifically get on the L&K are Leather/Alcantara seats (all leather on early L&Ks), Electric drivers seat with memory......this also remembers outside mirror positions.....and can be linked to different key fobs for different drivers. Also auto dimming and dipping external mirrors and I think Xenons were standard on L&K in 2007/8.

If you bought an Elegance you would get all the other L&K features bar the above. Some of the options are fitted to some vRS models...ie Leather and Xenons. Xenons were available as optional extras on most trim levels as is leather but the other items I mentioned above are L&K only features and were not on any option list.

I have full 'leather' on a 2008 L&K so I think the alacantra/leather combo which I saw on a few of the same age when I bought mine was an option rather than standard (or vice versa).

I imagine your full leather was probably an extra cost option.......but I'm not entirely sure.

Yes might have been that way round.
