My Spare turbo and trip to have it looked over

Featured Replies

Went down to Turbo Technics today with my "spare" turbo

(I hasten to add not driven by need, I've never had any issues with the sticking on my turbo or any other issue to be honest to date, in fact I might be done with the car before the original turbo is done with the car!)

it's more just knowing I have an insurance policy if ever I do and having never had the turbo properly checked out.....

They had a quick look on the bench, mechanically / its sound (travel/wear) so good news, good turbo.

The bad news, whoever had it was probably too gentle on the car, so its a bit coked up and will need a bit of a clean before its fully usable !

I'm going to hold onto this bargain turbo (bought in the distant past for £160) I think as they said if it comes to rebuild not sure if they have any on the shelves in future,

The manifold part could be the hard to get part apparently hence worth keeping hold of?

I've read there are plenty of decoke guides online too....and not mechanically inept but not sure about taking this path ! Anyone done this. I think for the hassle I won't bother but I am very interested by turbos so the inquisitive side of me wants to take a look !

this is a good video that i found interesting and very informative

Turbo Technics screwed up two hybrid turbo's for me and left me with a turboless car. The first turbo they blamed metal intercooler pipes as the reason as to why it broke and the second they blamed it on the garage clocking the turbo (which you have to do to fit it!?)

But at least they know when one is in working order!
