tinted headlights

Featured Replies

Hi guys. I was looking for info in this, but nothing came up. My dad's thinking of opening headlights up and spray the inside black. But which is the best way of opening it up? I assume heat gun and loads of patience. Also, which bits can be sprayed and which bits can't?

Thanks

ehm, on an Octy? dont spray...

the light out put is crap as it, so blackening them would be disastrous...

Smoked Lamin-x gets the top votes on here for finish and doesnt do too much output damage.

also... is it not an MOT fail for blackening the headlights?

As far as I know, if light output isn't reduced MOT will be fine.

I've seen several Octy's on here with tinted headlights and they seem to be alright. Lamin-x makes them look all hazy sort of thing, while if you spray them they stay clear if you know what I mean.

so black spray isnt going to reduce light output??

no,will increase light :))

I personally haven't done it, I've seen people on here spraying the part of inside of a headlight to make them darker, that's why I asked what's what.

put 'em in the oven to melt the glue.

(at your own risk)

Sorry, I hope i dont sound like im having a go

I just know how $hite our headlights are even with higher output bulbs - i work a lot of nights, so i know :D

Id hate for you to spray them, and then never be able to see again - in particular around last light when headlights are all near useless.

thus my suggestion of the laminex, which i think does give a very nice finish if applied well, without reducing the output.

Any idea of how long and what temperatures?

Lamin-x isn't exactly cheap. And only one seller on ebay supplies them.

Are you after tinting the lense or spraying the chrome inside the headlight. If so that wont reduce the light output. Thats what I will be doing.

Thanks, i guess my research skills are not great.

I mean spray the chrome inside, not the actual lens. But which parts can be sprayed, and which better left alone?

ahhhh.... now that different to what i interpretted from "tinted headlights" :D

So you can spray everything apart from those red parts? So I should remove all the rubbers, screws, basically everything I can. How about height adjustment motor for instance?

There is a good guide somewhere on how to do octy headlights. From what I remember you bake them in the oven to soften the glue, prise them apart carefully and remove the chrome trim and paint it. That's the only part that is painted

Yes there is a guide somewhere on here, ones it's split apart you'll see what you can paint, some people just do the front bezel but I did parts of the light too, just don't try masking areas off to paint as the chrome coating comes off very easy.

Here's an old pic of mine and you can see parts of the headlight that I painted

And this is with light smoke lamin x on top as well

Lamin x is the easiest option and saves splitting the light open but does reduce light output a bit which is poor to start with.

Think there was a pair of already painted lights for sale in the classifieds from a car that's been broke if there still available, might be worth checking out :)

Awesome, this is exactly what I am after. Thanks for the pictures mate, I read it should sit in the over for about 5 minutes on lowest temp possible.

It's only the front bazel, I want to do part of headlight like @dsmithmobile did. Thanks anyways.

To do the part of the headlight you have to use a brush right?

You don't want to get them too hot so just keep an eye on them and I did mine with a brush as I was going to mask off and spray them but started to do a line of masking tape and when I lifted it up the chrome started to lift so I just used a brush and went careful, just take your time and see if you can find the guide on here to help.
