When I picked up my vRS a few weeks back I asked the dealer about changing the oil, when the car was run in. No need to, he says, it won't need doing until it's first service.

So today with an hour or two to kill I bought some VW PD oil, new filter and sump bolt (

The oil is throughly tested and its just fine upto the first service @ 10k.

But if your happy you have changed your oil then thats cool. Just remmeber any service work not carried out by a VAT reg'd garage with parts made in the EU may invalidate yor warranty. That includes DIY interim services.

The oil I drained into a large collector tub, I then let it settle, and poured the top off ( should be it's cleanest ) into a clear jug. I swilled it around and then watched the residue slide down the sides. Silt is what it looked like.

All parts are genuine VW with all numbers on them to prove it, so no warranty problems

Parts dont have to be genuine VW, as long as they are made in the EU.

And as long as the work is done at a VAT reg'd garage and carried out in accordance to the spec laid out on the maintenance manuals, not on the driveway.

.....................The mileage was 1060, of gentle running in sort of driving, on town and country roads, but hardly any motorway miles. I thought the oil might be still fresh, but OH NO, those first miles really have taken it's toll on the 5w-40.

I always thought it was critical to the running in process to do plenty of miles on the factory fill before changing the oil.

I agree, 'running in' needs a certain ammount of wear as far as I understand, too much clean oil and nothing comes together to "fit" as I've been told, I always treat my cars as the manufacturers say, as soon as mine had done 1,000 miles I was caning it! never used a drop of oil up to it's 10,000 mile service! 12,000 miles now, and running perfect... always treated my cars this way, longest mileage I did from new was a saxo VTR, 150,000 miles in four years and no engine problems at all, never even opened the bonnet except to put screenwash in! (needed a gearbox though, bloody citroens!) so I would be careful to 'run it in' again! until your new oil gets dirty! caning it now if the engine is still "as new" could hurt it!

Does anyone know if the factory fill oil is exactly the same specification as the 505.01 used for subsequent oil changes? The reason I ask is that years ago VW used to use recycled oil for the factory fill, as it promoted engine wear and aided the running in process.

But a bit of caning once its run in never does any harm. I always make sure I bounce the boss' Saab on the limiter a couple of times when I borrow it for work's needs. :D I don't think she drives it that quick, and I think sometimes it could do with a good flushing out.

Dont forget the oil on a diesal looks crap very quick but is in fact fine.....

Otherwise they wouldn't recommend that it's fine until 10k or 1 year. Personally, I follow the handbook, if the engine gets ****ed, warranty......easy peasy.

I'm tempted to do a 5k miles oil and filter change now its had its first service.

This is mainly due to horror stories of oil being sucked up out of the dipstick instead of drained, and wanting tosee for myself how golden oil becomes black in only 5 miles...

Surely it can't do any harm?

However - I have no doubt that the Skoda servicing regime is more than adequate...

When dealers suck the oil up through the dipstick, do they measure it out to ensure they've removed it all before refilling? I guess if they miss that difficult to get to half litre which remains in the sump then they just knock this amount off your final invoice!
