spring loaded auto hatch opening

Featured Replies

Have read some mod,s on here regarding the above and think it 's really good. Bought springs of the right dimensions  from local engineering suppliers but were not powerful enough to lift the hatch. Can anyone say how successful they have been and where to get the right springs from  in this country.

You won't find them, end of. Hatch is too raked an angle for the weight to power ratio for the springs. Estate only just about manages it.

End of line.........

Yeah only an estate thing. Im getting some springs for my estate to try it.

Endless pages about on some other forum or other. Confirms above comments.

As blackspaven says it only just works on the estate too. In the cold it doesn't work well and in my case it put too much strain on the strut which kept popping off the clip at the top.

thanks for the info - shame it wasn't good news it would have been really good mod.

Sorry to hijack a bit, but how easy is it to do on the estate? Any links to part numbers etc?

Read through some previous posts on this, I did it to my estate last September and they still work now, I got the red springs and they were very easy to fit.

Check the struts are good before you do it, mine had been replaced as they weren't holding the tailgate up properly.

+1, I think that was my problem, they needed replacing (and probably still do!).

 + another 1

My struts were pretty much pooched. I put new ones on, complete with springs. Works a treat. :)

I did try messing around with the tailgate on the hatchback, but it's far too heavy. I think it would need to be fitted with rockets to make it work.

.......or possibly the electric struts from a Superb.
