Columbus - ordering of stored tracks

Featured Replies

I bought an audiobook and stored it in chapters as mp3 files, "Chapter 1.mp3", "Chapter 2.mp3" etc. I created the files in chapter order, so the dates get more recent.

When played back on the Columbus, it goes from chapter 1 to chapter 10, from 2 to 20 etc.

Is there any way I can change the order of the files?

Would it help if I renamed the files as "01.mp3", "02.mp3" etc? would the number coming first make any difference?

Yes I think changing them to 01,02,03 etc would do the trick.

The other option is to create a playlist file and copy to the SD card.

Thanks Phil,

Can you give me the dummies version of creating a playlist file? As in Windows Media Player playlist?

+1 :)

I've had this on a few media players over the years. A prefix of '0' has solved the problem every time. :)

So is the problem the fact that currently "Chapter" precedes the number, or is the lack of a leading 0 the problem?

i.e. "Chapter n.mp3" leads to wrong order, and "nn.mp3" would work, what about "Chapter nn.mp3"?

its because they are treated as A-Z and not  number fields, the location of the track number in the filename is unimportant since the sort order would be the same no matter where the track number is.

A-Z would be

1

10

11

12

2

21

22

3

.....

So you need to rename them so the numbers are 01, 02 etc. it does not matter where the number is in the filename, so chapter 01.mp3 is the same as 01 - chapter.mp3.

^^^^^^^^ exactly that.

It's a Windows & Mac thing as well, not just Columbus.

The solution is as above.

If you rename the file on your computer and put 001, 002, 003, etc. (only two digits are needed unless you have over 99 tracks, then you'll need three up to 999 tracks) in front of each track, they will appear in the order you rename them to. No need to change anything else and it won't affect the info given on the Columbus display whilst it's playing.

The wpl fix is working but I think I prefer the solution of renaming. The wpl option show the wpl as well as all the mp3 files so it's a bit messy IMO.
