Bit of a pickle..

Featured Replies

Hi,

Basically the short of it, I took a car to Germany on a banger rally (saxo), and the cars head gasket went and it wouldn't start up/ drive. Luckily it broken down near a petrol station with a scrap yard next to it, pulled all the plates, tax disc and chassis number off, left it next to the entrance to a scrap yard with a note explaining the issue an to scrap the car. Also spoke to the petrol station to inform the scrap yard manager of the problem

Now 2 months on I'm unsure what to do with the log book, do I export the car? Or how do I register it as scrapped with out knowing the scrap yards name?

Thanks

Use google maps etc to find the petrol station then find the name using the area and typing scrapyards near ....

I didn't think of that, thank you

In the short term, at least SORN it online to prevent getting tax renewal notifications and similar. :)

Yeah I thought that, but I think ill be gettin a letter through soon as I'm not insured on it no more :/. Its looking next to impossible to find this garage, not entirely sure where I was at the time.. dam! Is there anyway of scrapping it on paper without the garages name?

Haha unfortunately not, was just a laugh with a few mate's, wasn't thinking at the time so much just dumped and got in another car for the trip. What would happen if I export the car on the log book? Technically it has been... :/

I'd guess just sorn it for now and send DVLA a cover letter explaining!

Yeah I guess that's all I can do.

Thanks toxic, you've been helpful :)

I would be hesitant as declaring it as SORN on a certain date then later to explain it was left at a scrap yard before this date. Not that they would bother to look so far into it, but your car will have been recorded as leaving the country and not returning via port or tunnel. I would just write a letter saying exactly what happened, not much they can do but de-register it.

Do you have any idea of the approximate route you were on and the filling station company, could be narrowed down fairly easily checking on google for ones with a scrap yard next to them. Or contact others on the banger rally who might remember the route and where you crossed the border and facebook group for it of forum with pics and details posted?

Just use the permanently exported option
