My Columbus unit has gone dead all I get up is the Skoda navigation logo, it switches itself on brings up the welcome on board sign then after a short while it switches itself off repeating this process continually, ive tried re-booting, switching the power off for 24 hours inserting the disc all to no avail, contacted the dealer who I got the car from only to be told I need a new unit !! at £1750:00 Does anyone have any more options or can tell me of a good repair company by the way the car is a 2009 model

Did you try inserting a firmware upgrade disc or was it just your original Nav disc that you tried in post above? If not source a firmware upgrade disc and try this first.

If no joy then there are various repair places for this unit, try a google search for Skoda Columbus repair and RNS510 repair. I haven't used any, so can't recommend.

Worst case is to buy a new double din unit from likes of kenwood, pioneer etc that integrate with steering and heating controls on your Superb. To get the latest version with bluetooth, DAB etc you are talking about £950. Older versions are less to buy new, down to ~£5-600

You can source new replacement Columbus units from as little as €500, but you have no idea on source of these and reliability, so it could be a bit of a lottery, and you could also end up buying a stolen unit, so personally wouldn't be my preferred choice.

Cheers

Steve

You could replace it with a kenwood or preferably the pioneer double din unit, still set you back 7 or 8 hundred quid mind but try a specialist for repair first, I've had lots of ice installs in the past with lots of different dvd satnav units without any troubles yet these columbus units must have awfull hard/software, good luck with whatever you decide.

What about something like this Pioneer AppRadio: http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_991017_langId_-1_categoryId_165655

Currently £270 from Halfrauds.  Depends how gadgety you are, and whether you would miss a CD/DVD drive.

I'm with stevehg - a firmware update/reinstallation will most likely sort this.  It happened to me.

I agree with Ned, a new firmware upgrade worked on mine which is also a 2009 model, but you'll need new or to reinstall the maps.

Read through my post.

RNS-510 columbus restart or reboot repeatedly !

Good luck

Also worth reading my post about losing the gps signal as well.

Seen this numerous times before. Ned has posted solution to this in a number of threads.

Search for his firmware update solution.

I really like the AppRadio unit but I don't think it supports display of parking sensors or air conditioning on my Octavia MkII. I can live without the a/c bit (does not tell you anything that is not obvious on the a/c controls anyway) but I do like the visual representation of the reversing sensors (do you still get audio warning) and was also wondering about putting in front sensors as well.

An alternative perhaps would be to fit the AppRadio anyway, and put in some alternative LED type display for the parking sensors.

Latest update I contacted Skoda Ieamington again asking if they could supply a new motherboard if required only to be told that this was an internal part and as such they could not obtain it so if this was the problem it would require a new unit at £1700-00, but they could run a diagnostic check for £100 which if the motherboard was the problem it would mean a new unit not very good, or if it was a firmware problem they could run a re-fresh at £50 so all in all a poor service. I eventually contacted Hazzy Dayz of Hertfordshire (who are VW & Audi Specialist) with the problem they said it was one of two things either  a refresh was required or a new motherboard they would try the re-fresh first  which normally cured most problems but if not a new motherboard would be fitted (this would be a genuine Skoda part!!!!! ) took the car yesterday and it required a re-fresh at £120-00 to remove the unit and carry out the work finally refitting this included speed camera"s and the latest postcodes, they also said the refresh was guaranteed for 12 months and if it failed in this time they would fit a new motherboard and reduce the price of the motherboard by £120 which they quoted at £300, I would highly recommend this company as the service and help was first class

You could have probably done that yourself for free.

The re-fresh and firmware update discs are freely available to download on the internet.

Still a lot cheaper than having to buy a new one!

Always assuming you know what you are doing

Yes true.

I guess the same can be said for any service you pay for.... you could do it yourself... but that doesn't always mean you know how or won't mess it up! :D

Anyway. £120 is still good actually as it sounds like they stuck the new maps on for you too.

Plus their offer to reduce the new motherboard cost by what you paid for the update is very generous.
