Fix it or trade it in?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm hoping for some sound advice about my Fabia VRS 04. I love the car, but it has done 170k miles and now needs a new cam belt also there's a whine in 5th gear. The garage suspects its a dry bearing in the gearbox so will cost about £750.

So, my question is, do i trade it in for around £1000 (ive already been offered this) and just fork out for a new car.

Or...

If i spend £1000 and get the cam belt and gearbox all fixed then just keep the car till it explodes.

I don't know enough to really make an educated decision so i'm hoping the experience of you people will help!

Thanks in advance

Martyn

Not lost much if you change the gearbox oil first, that's if it's not already been done. Worth a try, I would if I wanted to keep the car.

Best get some more informed info on the models gearbox first though, like anyone else had similar problems.

If you can sort the gearbox noise without too much expense then the cambelt change surely has got to be done and keep the car.

Can you afford to trade in and buy a new car at a cost of £x thousands as opposed to £1-1,500 on fixing yours?

Will your next car need any new work doing to it that could cost £1-1,500?

Do you want to get rid of your car?

I'm looking at p/x-ing my Octavia and am going through similar situation.

£2-3,000 on repairs;

Was offered £4,000 against a £15,000 car;

Meaning I had £6-7,000 of 'capital' in my vehicle and had to find £8-9,000.

That logic works for me...

Isnt that 11k to find as the 2-3 isnt really yours??

Don't spoil my mathematical logic!

If I keep it I'll have to spend £2-3k to sort it out.

If I trade it, I don't have to.

Therefore I can get £4k trade in + save ££2-3k = £6-7k in my favour...

In reality, I still need to find £15k - whatever I can get for mine.

Indeed, and 2-3k spend on a 4k car is a bit of a close call as to whether it is worth it...

It would be cheaper to find a second hand gearbox to put in rather than getting yours fixed
