Borrowed my brothers nikon d5100 and 70-300 lens to take some pics of the daughter doing some jumps on her horse at the stables. Was amazed at how some came out tbh, now hooked and looking for my own camera

He has the standard 18-55 lens too, is there a particular lens to look out for or are these sizes ok?

New to all this dslr lark but fair want to try my hand at it for when she does show jumping etc.

I'm an complete amateur with my first DSLR.  Enjoying playing with it, really ought to read up how to use it and get a 200 lens so things can look a bit closer!

For a first time user those shots are awesome mate!

As for lenses the standard 18-55 is a great lens to start with. Very versatile.

I have a D5100 been using DSLR's for about 7 years now. Im no professional but if you want any advice or questions give us a shout.

It's a great hobby to get into very rewarding.

The pics are pretty good and will get better with practise. There are some issues due to differing exposures (the horse is dark brown in one but light brown in the next) but with a bit of experience those are easy to sort

I would stick with the 18-55 until you know what you want to do with the camera. The kit lenses these days are pretty good.

Great pictures and a good piece of kit for sure. 

 

I'm currently using an Olympus E-500; looking to upgrade to a Nikon D5200 perhaps.

Some deals to be had as the D5300 has appeared now.... but we shall see.

Hi, think it's a very good start and remember to have fun with the DSLR. Also, dare to leave the auto modes actually learning and understanding to take more control of the exposure and the depth of field, focus plane and so on. It is not magic but can take some time to master ... :peek:  ...

 

When it comes to how the different elements in the photo can be placed and used, please see more about the rule of thirds. And it's just a rule ... that can be broken whenever you feel like it ... ! The photo composition is always up to the photographer ...

Good start mate.    Taking photos from anything but the standing position adds instant appeal, you've already demonstrated that.    It would be best to have your own camera as you would get used to the different manual settings quicker, lots of time and usage improves your technique.

Lastly buy the biggest memory card you can and take lots of shots of the same subject with different settings,  costs nothing.
