Measuring blocks 04 - camshaft timing

Featured Replies

I've used basic diagnostic tools for about a year now, but today I've forced myself into going further!

I've been fixing a 2008 Skoda octavia with a 1.9 pd TDI engine. It had a snapped timing belt.

I've replaced all 8 valves and "caps" with hydrolic tappets built in, I've timed it up with the proper timing kit with new belt etc and it's running but gets rougher and cuts out sometimes. Doesn't drive well over 3,000 rpm either.

Long story short I believe the timing is out on the camshaft by the three 13mm bolts which adjust the timing slightly. I've checked the timing on my own personal computer (launch tech cReader crp123) by going on measuring block 4 and checking the torsion value.

Reading into it -3 to +3 it will run but the closest to 0 the better. I checked my own car but the number changed every 2 seconds as it updated, ranging from 1.10, 1.65, 2.20.

How do I know which number I'm meant to use?

I'm thinking of adjusting my timing now even tho it runs fine etc... Thinking it may improve the car if it's spot on.

Also woundering what other measuring blocks make for interesting reading?

Thanks

The numbers will change at idle as the engine runs very lean at idle, and the cambelt is working hard to move the injectors. Take the readings with the aircon on, or increase revs to just over 1000 RPM, reading should be fairly steady. minus 0.6 seems to be the sweet spot.

Brilliant, thanks!

Updated my computer last night so will be testing it again soon :)

Recorded the data and went for a drive, still the same, the number changes still.

I'll try and get the data off the diag tool and put it in here for people to see.

Any other measuring blocks worth looking at?

I'd like to check turbo actuator to see if the rod needs adjusting.

Also like to check air flow meter and check map sensor for actual and requested boost.

If anyone is quite clued up on this type of stuff please pm me also, I'd like to learn more!

9 ,10 ,11 are airflow and boost related but you really need vcds to get the best of it.

the car with the running problem, did you set the injectors back up?

I set it to aprox 1.10 and it ran perfectly, gave it to the customer to run over the weekend and will adjust it / check closer next week.

The problem I'm having is the torsion number changing, even checking at 1,200rpm and above.

I have a fully up to date launch master tool computer which can do anything and everything.

I did buy a vag-com thing last year off eBay with the disc and blue obd cable but never got it to work!

Trying to upload on my phone but this is what I have currently on my own fabia vrs.

Going of block 4, value 4, it's the bottom reading I've been checking and adjusting.

Could be camshaft sensor starting to fail then

That was my thought also.

Will see how things go, will have a play about on my own car and see how I progress.

Checked another 1.9 pd engine today and it's the same, the number changes every now and then. I find revving it around 3,000 rpm it settles on 1.65.

Next step is to try it on the proper diagnostic tool rather than my own to see if results change.

Well... The car with the snapped belt came back today for adjustment. I'm still struggling with the torsion value adjustment with the number constantly changing.

I made a video to show you what I mean, sound is a little farward but you get the idea.

i dont think its measuring in same way vcds does tbh

download vcds lite and see what that reads.

Just checked it now on vag-com and it's exactly the same, the last value (on vag-com has -3 to +3 ok) on it... It's still the same.

I checked the value on my vrs and the results are similar with the number always changing.
