Lights on dash after disc and pad change

Featured Replies

Hi, Help needed please, I decided to change the disks and pads all round the work went okay but now I have a couple of problems.

First of all, I took the car for a drive after changing pads and discs and when I got back after about 4 miles the rear wheels were very hot.

I also have the ABS, TCS and tire pressure monitor lights all on. They go out when I start the car up and pull away until about 15 to 18 miles an hour then they all come back on again. Any ideas would be very helpful.

Thanks.

The ABS, TCS and tire pressure systems all rely on the speed sensor, so that's where my money would be.  Could be the sensor itself is damaged or the sensor speed ring built in to the wheel bearing has gone (a common fault on the rear wheels at around 70-80k miles).

Would need the fault codes read to be sure though - probably a trip to a garage, or find someone with VCDS who'll read the codes for you.

Good luck and welcome to Briskoda btw :)

Thanks rossm, I'll try and get the fault codes tomorrow, I know someone who may have the kit needed to get codes. Thanks for the welcome. (not yet worked out how to get the smileys up yet). ;-)

Did you wind the rear calipers all the way in and then adjust the handbrake as specified? If not it could be the handbrake binding causing the heat issue.

I was having very similar thoughts about the handbrake binding and heat. Actually, if this means that that the rear wheels are under-rotating wrt the fronts, this could cause the ABS and TCS faults as well.

As to the tyre pressure monitor, my experience is that these are notoriously unreliable, and the best place to start is with the actual tyre pressures, using a pen guage to check them.

+1 ensure as said rear piston wound fully back into caliper housing..

One question are both rears HOT, or just one side, either way, as said..

Did you knock the magnetic ring in the hub when changing the brakes? If you car is getting on these will be getting very fragile and it would be easy to knock out a chunk giving you the exact symptoms you have. I did it myself taking off a loose stone guard.

Ive had the same issue on my PD170 after having the brakes done, stupid garage didnt do the handbrake adjustment or anything and it ended up heating the rear caliper up so much the paint flaked off!!!

Pull out the ashtray behind the centre console and if the cable is off on one side adjust it and loosen it off.. worked for me, initially i thought i had a sticking caliper, turns out it was a **** mechanic!!!

Metblackrat, KenONeill, and giandougl, yes I did rewind the caliper all the way in, but no I did not adjust the hand brake! Thanks for that I have now done that today and it seems to have solved that problem.

Aspman, rear discs were very hard to shift and I did have to tap them with a rubber hammer to aid removal. It's an '07 with 68k on the clock.

Dread1977, yes I did not adjust it! . Have now though. Thanks.

Well my mate came round today and we plugged in his equipment and it came up with the following...

00290 - ABS wheel speed sensor rear left (G46)

Sporadic

003 - Mechanical Failure

So I've narrowed it down to the rear left (am I correct in thinking this means "passenger side").

What do you guys think I should do now?

How do I work out if it's the sensor or the hub?

Thank you to all who have helped me with this problem. It is much appreciated.

That's the exact error I had, same wheel (passenger rear) and it was a chunk out the ring. Same age as well. Other side went 6 months later.

With the wheel off and your head in the arch you can, just, peer through a gap and see the ring. you can rotate the hub and look for any missing bits. If you can get your finger to it you could even feel for it. Mine was missing a chip about 1cm long.

If it is that it's a new hub I'm afraid, the ring isn't serviceable separately. I'd suggest you replace the stone guard at the same time, they're not expensive but again the hub has to come off to fit it so you might as well do it at the same time. They oxidise at the mounting points and come loose.

Ok, so I have removed the hub and it looks like this...

I have ordered a new hub.

Next question is the sensor has a slight mark on it, should I change that as well?

Have a good day everyone. :sun:

It's an easy thing to change so you might as well try it.

Thanks for your help everyone. New hub and ABS sensor fitted, handbrake adjusted, fault codes reset and all is well. VRS back on the road. Next to see if it passes the MOT! Need to book it in by the end of the month.
