Very wet TDI

Featured Replies

Hi all,new to  the forum and in the running for dumb dumb of the year. :rain:

Cut a long story short, got stuck on beach with incoming tide, water up to number plate on front, sump resting on sea bed and wheels dug into holes.Water did not get into breather as air filter is dry.Got towed home and let sit overnight to let water if any,run down into sump. Started this morning with a rattle but ran and sounded ok but alternator light stayed on,suspectet wet brushes..

I removed all seats and interior to dry in the sun, thought I would start her again but no go.Took battery out charged it,now turns over but will not start.Checked all fuses are ok on battery, window will not go up,nor will skylight open

Apart from the obvious thought that I have bent a few con rods, would there be any reason she won't start? I live in hope

ohh God...

I think it was a very bad idea to try to start the car.  Insurance claim required? Could be a write-off!

before starting i would of taken all the intercooler pipes of to make sure water didnt get in them

Should of done more pre checks before starting it. Although i think you could have an electrical issue.

OH S$%^.I forgot about the intercooler pipes.Looks like I'll be calling my insurance.Even at write off I wouldn't get her value and barely enough to pay the guys who pulled me out.02 Elegence to the recyclers by the look of it unless I pick up a replacement engine for little money. But I'll live in hope until I check out the electrics.

 Thank you for your replies

Its most likely electrical. If the air filter was dry i can't see how water could get in. The intercooler pipes are all sealed so so surely they wouldn't leak in? Find every piece of wire, connector etc buy the biggest tin of wd40 you can find and go mad with it. Land Rovers carry on running submerged in water with just snorkels.

I think it is electrical.I pulled diesel from tank,no water,I pulled intercooler pipes,no water.I put a fully charged battery in Yesterday and this morning it was as flat as a pancake.

As i took everything out and spotted a small rectangular box on the floor below the dash which says "DO NOT REMOVE THIS DEVICE". I'm curious as to what it is,Imobiliser?

Thanks again to everyone who responded.

It could be a gps tracker installed by an insurance company? How long have you owned it

I've had it three years now.Had a closer look.Control module for the windows, seems there was a change made in around '02 and the module was relocated by the drivers door later in the year,so I've been told, and I think it's done as they refuse to move.Gave up and took it to an auto electrician he's going to run dianostics tomorrow.

This engine is VERY strong, as long as you don't literally pour water into the intake pipes you will be fine in that regard. I would say the chances of bent rods are incredibly low.

Definitely got to be electrical somewhere, perhaps fuel pump or something could be having trouble? I doubt that can take the same abuse.

Tested fuel pump solenoid and getting 12v,not getting anything at heater plug boots, and I have been told water did cover the window module,I hadn't noticed as I was too busy trying to tie on rope to the back of a tractor :D but it's up to the electrician now and the pain in my wallet :rain:

Keep us informed how it goes buddy.

****Sorry just realised youv'e checked this already......must learn to read more thoroughly

When I bought my octy from auction, the place i bought it from had tried to start it of a jumper pack with the + and - the wrong way. At the time I didn't know this and assumed I had bought a duff, as it would turn over and start but die straight away. I searched around and pushed the car to the little garage over the road. First thing the check was the alternator fuse in the little black box on top of the battery - completely frazzled. Replaced with 50p fuse, hey presto away we go.

Sorry for the long story, but may be worth a check.

Cheers,

Anty

Well the TDI is running, :sun: but not charging :wall: .So alternator removal.Window shorting somewhere so they're up but not operational. At €140 for dianogistic check and soldering of two wires,I called it a day with the electrician.I could buy a complete, running '99 Octy estate with a '03 19TDI in it for another €160 :swear: .But I'll change the alternator and while I'm at it put a new belt on. Thank you all for the responses. Great forum

Glad someone was able to give some direction :)

Where in our little isle are you located? welcome to the club :D

Donegal,God's county :) .

Well a little more success.I now have central locking and no longer blowing fuse for window and sky light. But windows will not work, neither did the alternator I got from the breakers yard.So I get to do it all over again to morrow :swear:

Was wondering if a code reset on the comfort control module would be of any benefit? Oh ,to get at the alternator,I had to remove the headlight to get at the clip holding the inter-cooler pipe  as I couldn't get my hands in at the bolts and I have tools but not enough by the look of it.And just to make it even harder I couldn't get the fan off,so I had to sacrifice some coolant and remove the radiator pipe. The joys of motoring, especially when it's my own stupidity got me into bother in the first place. :'(

Well still no sunroof or windows. Here she is having the bath and the high tide mark.I tried to upload a couple of pics of the wiring that was put in on the relays with two fuses,a 20amp and 30 amp.One looped into the yellow and black wire and the other looped into the red wire second one over from the yellow and black. Can anyone enlighten me as to what he was doing please.

On the up side the,the charging light has gone out,yep got the  alternator working, but the air bag is on,oh well. post-118467-0-93685300-1403633118_thumb.jpgpost-118467-0-17294800-1403633143_thumb.jpg

Worked it out, looking good for a comfort control unit recoding.I also checked the window regulator, one live, red and brown,I'm assuming this is the central locking live as it works, nothing to any other terminal in the block.

Ah the often overlooked little bulb :D

Glad you found the source at last!

So how does the engine sound? Glad your seeing a result mate.

Engine sounds as it always did :sun: shake rattle and roll ,just a few wee niggling things, and the last one is the airbag warning light and having scoured the forum, from reading there and knowing the connections got wet,I'll pull the carpet and do a job on the floor connectors.Mustn't have put down enough WD40,I suppose two and a half 300ml cans wasn't

Was the airbag controller submerged? It sits on top of the tunnel between the front footwells and based on that 2nd photo I would have thought it would have been underwater.

I don't think so as the high water mark didn't go over the tunnel, there was some soakage. And no fault code showed for the airbag when the diagnostics were run.Though if it is a case of changing this, would it be as simple as disconnecting the battery, unplugging and replacing?

Now another bit of bother, the turbo isn't working. Can the air flow meter be checked or is this a replace and hope?

The Mrs seems surprisingly happy in the pic
