Sound when going over speed bumps

Featured Replies

Hello

My lovely 1.8 ftsi octavia 08 plate has suddenly begun making an odd noise from the rear of the car when i go over speed humps .

It sounds as if i have a dinner service in the boot that is rattling around when i go over the humps .

I have removed everything from the rear including parcel shelf and spare wheel but still the same noise but only ever when i hit a bump or go over a speed bump of which there are hundreds in Reading .

And no i am not carrying china around in the boot .

Anybody got an idea what it could be please .

Have a look at the rear springs and suspension set up, something maybe amiss.

Not sure if this could be it but when I had a seat leon some coins had some how got under the rear seats drove me that mad I took the hole of the back of the car apart only to find £1.47 in 20p 10p 2p and 1p coin!!!

Could be the aluminium heat shield(s) for the exhaust, retaining clips rust and disintegrate allowing the shield(s) to move around.

Rear ARB drop link would be my prime suspect.

RARB drop links would sound duller, more of a knock than what OP likened to as dinner service.

As a side note, I just replaced a RARB drop link on mine last week trying to get to the bottom of a knocking over bumps.

It was fine until I had to use the grinder to remove it!

I suspect the knocking is from the top shock mount as everything else checks out OK.

I'll leave it to another day, got sills to tackle this week.

I have exactly the same tinkling noise on my 06 2.0 petrol vrs, everything was fine until I took it in for new tyres they lifted the car off the floor and fitted new tyres a couple of days later and it tinkles just going over rough ground and bumps it sounds like it's the rear left wheel and it's only noticeable with the windows open, this rattle is so annoying

I had something similar and it turned out to be the backing plate off the brake disc!

Might be the rear brake disk stone guard.

They corrode (despite being aluminium) around the mounting bolts and come loose. But they stay on the car because the hub goes through them.

Easy to tell just give them a wiggle.

Hub off job to change them which is expensive for a silly little component. I guess if you can get the bolts out you could refit them with some big washers to hold it tight.

Yup! "I suspect the knocking is from the top shock mount..." it was with my 2007 2.0 PD VRS, been driving me nuts over the year getting seriously worse over last few weeks, prompted me to take to garage, enough is enough! Thought they might just tighten bolts up on shocker, unfortunately it exploded at same time covering mechanic in oil!  Had both shockers replaced...bliss, no more knocking and banging about now :-)
