1.9tdi misfire

Featured Replies

hi all,

My 06 Octavia  1.9tdi Elegance has been acting up lately , hoping some bright bod can point me in the right direction for a cure.

Started about two weeks ago when coming out of a shopping centre , waiting at the lights it cut out.  Started no bother and away we went , drove 50 miles , stopped and started ok, 5 mins later then going up a hill nearing home it started to stutter and misfire. Opened bonnet and nothing amiss, so put the VCDS on it and no codes at all.

Thinking a one off I forgot about it until drove 50 miles , and going into the town it started to stutter and misfire , black smoke and dying at lights. Got parked up and went to my appointment about 1 hour later went back and it started ok , no problems and drove about a mile and parked up again. Came back 20 mins later and just wouldn't start, as if its not getting fuel (like changing fuel filter and not bleeding it) firing but dying again.

Gave up trying, opened bonnet and it cooled down . 2 hours later tried it and it started no problem. Drove home 50 miles and went like a dream .

It seems that it doesn't  like starting when hot. If it gets hot after a run at least 30 miles  it wont start about 25% (which is rising) of the times. Today it started to cut out going up a hill struggled over the top it seemed to pick , got home and switched off, it started so I switched off again.  10 mins later it would not start  Tried removing the coolant temperature senor plug to make the ECU think the engines cold but no difference. Changed battery for a year old one.  Have fitted a new CTS , discovered there are two on mine , also have ordered a camshaft  position sensor and another CTS.  Also thinking it might be something with the fuel pick up but that shouldn't affect it when on level ground.  Or heat affecting fuel pump.

  So any ideas anyone

As an experiment went out and removed the top of the fuel filter , checked for dirt etc, seemed OK ,  before fitting the lid back on the filter body turned on the ignition and checked how much fuel was pumping . it only pumped for about 2/3 seconds before the flow stopped , is this normal or should it have pumped until I turned the ignition off ?

Anybody know ? :notme:

stab in the dark but maybe if it senses the fuel is pumping but not being injected/ firing then it'll cut out as a safety measure?

Yeah Lee01  .,Makes sense doesn't it . if in a crash with fuel pipes severed and ignition on who knows what could happen !.

Yes that's normal. When the key is switched on the lift pump runs for a second or so to prime the system. It will then cut out and only begins running again once the engine has actually started.

Thanks Nick 74 ,

Something else to discount for my misfire,     :nerd:     I learn something new everyday.

On your year this could be the wiring to the injectors in the head. i.e. wiring breaking dow when it gets hot but not when cold. They are only £70 ish and are fairly easy to fit, might be worth a try.

Is it the wiring loom that runs into/under  the rocker cover ?   Is there anyway that you know of testing it ?  Certainly if it does break down when hot it would fit my problem.

Yes, thats the one. There is no way of testing an intermittent fault to the best of my knowledge, this is just one area you may want to consider. The usual fault with the wiring is rough idle but it could cause the symptoms you describe.

Little slow in getting back to you, I did notice yesterday that after starting it up and letting it idle for 5 mins it started to do the rough idling thing, That could be the problem but its not my problem as I have just traded it in for a 1.6hdi octy

 Thanks for the replies
