Engine life 1.8 TSI?

We are looking at getting a 3 or 4 year old Octavia and have found an immaculate one with 1.8 TSi engine for a good price. Having previously found modern diesels troublesome we are happy to move to petrol (our mileage is less than 10k per annum and involves a lot of short city journeys)

 

My concern is that we are picking up an 80k mile car and would expect to keep it until about 150k - will it last?

 

It may be petrol engines dont last and we need to look to an older diesel, so we have also found an immaculate 05 1.9 TDi with similar miles (and really rather cheaper)

 

For now a more modern diesel Skoda is probably out of budget

I would have thought it would last that mileage easily especially if regularly serviced. I have a 2.0 tsi currently with 59k miles and intend keeping it another few years by which time it will be well past 100k.

I have a 1.6 fsi and it is currently at 108,000.

Of course it will last!

IMHO Change oil every 6k... as its a chain cam 

These ridiculous extended services of 20k for an oil change can not be good for this engine

I have a  2007 build  1.8tsi manual.  Serviced every 15,000 km up to 60,000km then I started doing mid service (7500km) oil/filter  changes after that.  Currently on 140,000km and running like dream.  I expect to keep it at least another 100,000km.  It's a jewel of an engine.

The petrol engines seem to be pretty sound with a few exceptions.

 

I had a 2007 tfsi with 83k on the clock until recently and going by the MOT emissions and mpg results the engine was actually getting better and better with age.

Other parts of the car prompted me to move it on but I was confident that the engine was probably only halfway through it's life maybe less.

 

I serviced annually, not variable, and used super unleaded. Everything else was just done to VAG standards by a VAG specialist indy.

I agree fully with PC1212.  OK our car not done the mileage as others as it has only done 25K miles in 4 1/2 years.  It is not used for short journeys as we have 2 cars and might not move it for 2-3 days at a time.  But we always use good quality long life oil and in fact I change it again in between services.  Ok, this is over the top I know but its our pride and joy alongside the Citigo and I want to look after it.  Under the oil filler cap it is immaculate, never had any sludging problems, mayonnaise issues etc. Car is on a fixed service regime.

 

And I always use a Shell Nitro+, with low mileage the price doesn't bother me.  Never missed a beat and goes very well.  I know they are supposed to be 160bhp odd but it feels more like 180bhp+.

I agree re the BHP. I once had a Mk. 1 vRS 180 bhp and my 1.8TSi feels every bit as punchy, though some of it might be the better torque at lower revs.

I forgot to mention that I've had a Bluefin remap since 50,000km & run on crap Aussie 98ron (more like 96 or 97).  So my engine is under a bit more stress than normal.

i've a 57 MY08 1.8 TSI and this has just turned 70K, the engine's fine but you do have to check the oil level every couple of months as they do like to drink a bit. I get the oil changed yearly at around 11,000 miles and always insist of using VW 507.00 long life, and top it up with the same. 

I think you meant VW 504.00 oil. VW 507.00 is for diesels, although both specs often if not always come in the same bottle.

Yes its same. Dealer here uses 504.00/507.00 on my 1.8 TSI, but their big metal oil barrels from Shell has it printed 504.00/507.00.

I've got a nearly unused container of Castrol Magnatec 5W-40. It says "suitable for all modern engines. Would it be dodgy to use it in small amounts of top up?

should have the oil spec on it.

 

i wouldn't use anything but recommended spec if you don't want to cause yourself problems!

Which 5w-40 Magnatec?  Professional or Professional C3 or one of the older ones.  It should say on the back label what API spec it meets & what manufacturer specs it meets.

Almost no oil used between annual services (only doing 7K miles per year!) Top up needed 6 months after service is  maybe 250 cc or so. Even that is belt and braces, as oil level still well on the right part of the dip stick,

No, 504.00 is the petrol spec.  507.00 is the diesel spec.  99.9% of the time the bottle shows both specs.

But what if the cars on variable service. I mean aren't you supposed to change 504.00 spec every 10k. Also when I bought the 507.00 it did say it was suitable for modern VW petrol and diesel cars. My car is on variable service but I service it every 10k irrespective.

VW 502.00 = Petrol time and distance

VW 504.00 = Petrol long life

VW 505.01 = Diesel time and distance (unless a DPF is fitted in which case VW 507.00 must be used)

VW 507.00 = Diesel long life

There is nothing wrong using long life oil for time and distance (fixed interval) servicing. For variable service intervals only long life oil can be used.

if it's an even number it's a petrol spec.  Odd number is diesel spec.

 

502.00 is every 10k.  504 is for variable.  For the minimal cost difference these days (used to be a 100% premium 5 years back) & the issues with inlets carboning-up, I'd just run 504/507 no matter what service regime you choose.

For a small amount like that I'd just use what's on the shelf.  I'm sure dozens would disagree with me. 

 

You still haven't said what's on the label.  If it's 502.00 it's compliant anyway.

Dearly beloved has a 2003 Leon Cupra which has the previous generation 1.8T (AUQ) on 155k with no issues  :clap: . Mainly short journeys with some 'spirited' driving mixed in. (Porsche and BMW garage just up the road, so much fun when the sales reps are 'demonstrating' the performance and get left red faced :devil: ...... but I digress). As already mentioned use quality oil to vw spec and change every 5k to 6k because of the short journeys.
