VRS Gearbox and clutch problems

Featured Replies

Got a VRS and on a recent long journey it kept jumping out of sixth gear, but was OK in fifth. Then heard a couple of thuds and what sounded like bits of the transmission disintegrating, and car started jerking. Pulled over and couldn't get it into another gear but eventually got it into neutral. AA patrol reckoned it was something to do with the release or thrust bearing. Not driveable at the moment and wheels lock up when being pushed backwards. Strange thing is it only had a new clutch and dual mass flywheel in January (previous owner at an independent dealer hundreds of miles away). Any idea of the issues/cost of repair? Worried it will be pricey!

If your in neutral then wheels should turn. Have you got a clutch pedal ?

Will it start and run in neutral ?

Sounds to me like your gearbox is knackered not clutch and flywheel

If it's locking up in neutral then it's the gearbox

New gearbox time. Not cheap, probably the sixth gear syncro ring has broken up, or rear bearing for third shaft.

Thanks, yes it will start and run in neutral.

Any idea on the cost of a new gearbox being fitted?

sorry to highjack this thread, but I'm having some gearbox issues too.

Its quite difficult to get the car into 1st gear, there is some grinding noise in 1st, and 2nd, lots in 3rd and a some in 4th, 5th and 6th.

I know a lot of things people think are gear box issues end up being clutch/ flywheel, but i've had these replaced around 5K miles ago.

My garage have had a look at the oil in the sump and its full of metal fragments.  So apparently I need a new gearbox.

I'm sure i've seen threads on here where people have sugested you can get a refurbed one ofr £300 or something.   Where?!  I called up a gearbox place in bristol who quoted me  £1000+ VAT + Labour to sort mine out!

Any advice people?

eBay have some for £350 secondhand

Any second hand part is a gamble. Unless it comes with some kind of warranty

Rebuilding gearboxes is a fine art, and more often than not rebuilt boxes are pants unless done by a professional. I know it's expensive, but a new box is the best option, as you get a full warranty with it.

I have sourced a second hand box from a breakers yard but the codes are different. According to my documents, mine is HDS but this one is JNC as it's from a 2007 model which has a shorter ratio. Will the JNC box fit mine?
