Free or ultra cheap mods

Featured Replies

I never thought I'd say this but those micra's look AWESOME!

Boost leaks are a great place to start, I would buy yourself a couple of metres of 3 and 5mm (I THINK!) silicone vac hose and replace it all. I found a lot of mine was very frayed and in one or two places had worn through. Boost is a lot more responsive and reliable on my TDI now.

Those two micras do indeed look nice.  So far i have done the 249 bypass and done the wak box mod, it does indeed seem to hold boost better and gone is the stuttering at low rpm/boost, and it sounds better on pick up and the dump sound is now there.  It does seem to pull better as well.  So thats 2 cheap/free mods done, cost me less than a fiver to do, got a new recirc valve on order so that may help a little if only for the noise.  I have the AUM lump in mine with the DBW set up and K03s turbo, can i do the old trick of putting pre load on the wastegate actuator to make more boost? or is the ECU gonna just hold it back? i know its primative, but thats me, i like owt for nowt.

Micras are funny

If your below 80 you need a balaclava to drive one

Could you please enlighten me on the 'Wak box' mod please? No idea what that means!

It means drilling holes in your airbox in simple terms

All the vacuum lines and boost hoses are as good as new, i think two of the boost hoses have been replaced before i got the car as they have Audi markings on them, that said my car is an 03 plate with 90k on it, so its on low mileage, it it had FSH too, so no worries on that front, got a boost gauge on order with some silicone hose, so once i get that plumbed in i will have a better idea of the boost level.

Any ideas on the old skool turbo mod, with winding on 3 turns of preload onto the WGA?

The turbo is a VNT not a wastegate turbo.

VNT is just the intake of the turbo, its a Variable Nozzle Turbine, that doesnt control the boost output of the turbo, just how much air gets in and at what speed, ALL turbo's have some form of wastgate, either internal or external, this is the part that regulates the total boost pressure.

The wga mod can be done but it's better to remap for better boost

Care to share? [emoji18] always interesred in free mods as long as it doesnt damage anything of course.

It involves winding on three turns of pre load onto the WGA, this makes the actuator have to work harder to supply the referance boost, its an old trick that makes the turbo deliver more boost than is required by holding the wastegate more closed up than normal, so at WOT it doesnt open up as much as normal, normally makes 2-4 more psi at WOT, its propper old skool, but it works, on my old renault 11 turbo it made another 20 BHP just from preload alone, i aint expecting it to make that sort of gains on a more modern engine, but as i said, owt for nowt :)

Cool, I dont really know how accessible the turbo is or what am actually doing so will probs leave it alone lol.

its a PITA to get at but not impossible,  I never bothered in the end as I have enough other things to worry about fixing.

I thought I might have a go at the 'venting intercooler arch' mod...

Didn't want to just drill indiscriminate holes, lol!

So had a measure up, and a look round ebay.

Found this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251380553432?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&var=550310082831&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Will let you know how I got on with fitting it in the arch, and post some pics...

Put it so that the louvre slats are lower back than front.
