A Question about SDI Fabia Steering

Featured Replies

Hi All
Am hopeing one of you can give me a straight answer, as at the moment I am getting conflicting advise from different people/garages.

I have a 2002 Fabia Comfort Estate with the 1.9 SDI Engine.

As far as I know it doesnt have ABS or Traction contol (I can lock the brakes under heavy breaking, and the wheels will spin if on gravel/snow etc).

So the question is do you know if this model has a Steering Angle Sensor or a Steering Torque Sensor ?

I am getting the Power Steering light on the dash  and am trying to cure the fault, and had my codes read last saturday, but from talking to a some people today, they say the codes must be wrong, as my car doesnt have a Steering Angle Sensor as it doesnt have ABS / Traction control, and that instead it had a Steering Torque Sensor. But then other people are saying that it does have the Steering angle sensor !!

So, does anyone know what I have, or a way to find out for definite ?

Cheers

Andy

PS, I have read the long thread on the power steering, but it doesnt really help in this situation, but does anyone have a copy of the guide that its linked to the VRS site that is no longer online ?

Steering angle sensor which is fitted into the rack just below where the column joins it.

As far as I'm aware, even the most basic Fabia has ABS. Mine does and it's poverty spec.

Item 6 or 10 depending on sensor type...

Thanks for the reply TMB

This seems to be part of the problem, some people are saying that all Fabias had ABS, but mine certainly doesnt, and in the past I have seen a few posts of Fabia SDI owners not having ABS.

Does anyone know of any way of checking for sure what sensor I need ? (other than jacking it up and taking old one off).

Cheers

Andy :-)

If you ring TPS I imagine they'll be able to tell you by sticking in your reg or VID

Not all Fabias have ABS.

Oh really? I thought they did. Seems bizarre that they would put ABS on lowly MPI but not on a 1.9 diesel.

Thanks all for the replies.
Fordfan, thanks for the part number :-) do you mind if I ask where you got the information about the lack of ABS ? Iam convinced I dont have ABS, but it seems many people (like TMB above) keep telling me that they all had ABS.

Oli, I spoke to TPS, and that slightly muddied the waters as they guy was talking about the sensor behind the airbag, which I am pretty sure is wrong, for these Fabias the concensus seems to be that the sensor is on the rack.

See the thing with a bunch of brake pipes going into it, just below where your ECU clips to the firewall?

Has your car got this lump? That's the ABS pump/manifold/controller.

On the 1.9 TDI the ABS controller is under the airbox IIR, but an easier way to check for it is at the front wheel itself, there'll be a brake hose and ABS speed sensor with a small connector plugged in. I also have a button on my dash that can turn off ASR/TCS and a couple of dash lights relating to both systems. Breakdown of system here. PartsBase seems to be under impression there are mk1 Fabias without ABS.

I remember that not all Fabias have ABS, because it's alot easier to reconnect the the rear washer pipe on non ABS equipped Fabias.
