plastic in sump

Featured Replies

hi i have a 1.2 skoda fabia azq engine. i believe it has jumped a tooth on the cam chain as when i came to start the car it wouldn't rev above 3k and wouldn't stay at idle either. im working through what i can while im waiting for the locking tool's. upon removing the sump the oil was fairly clean but in the bottom there was a small round white bit of plastic would anyone happen to know what its from?

Sump sealant broken off / too much used when new

i did think that to start with but its a hard plastic

Maybe a part of a broken timing chain guide??

You can investigate the chain timing without the locking tools, probably more easily actually, as you don't need to get the crank sensor out which looks like a bit of a PITA.

Here's how I did it.

Edit: can you post a picture of this plastic piece, with something in shot for scale?

That looks like one of the locating parts from the timing chain guides.

what sort of damage is it likely to have done or will it be minimal as it was only just turned over

It's a hard one to call. When do you think the timing jumped?

Does the engine turn over freely by hand?

I.e put a socket on the crank and turn the engine over feeling for any metal to metal contact or anything like that.

Best bet is to change the timing chain for a full kit and inspect more from there. It isn't a job for the faint hearted mind.

just got the chain kit today and should have the crank housing off tomorrow. then im waiting on the locking pins to time it all up

i went about a mile and the car was fine and come to start the car again and it was struggling to idle and wouldn't rev past 3 and i pretty much left it there. it was a bit hesitant to accelerate the week before but that was at about 50mph.

What year is the car, and how many miles on the clock?

53 plate 111k

What parts are included in the chain kit you've got?

  • Author

the chain kit has the two long guides, the sprockets and the chain along with new nuts and oil seal. it seems to be missing the top chain guide.

the timing case is now off and the long guide has broke on the right and the middle metal stud looks broken along with the top guide which has sheared the bolt.

the plastic in the sump was off the top chain guide.

Thought so. Good luck with it all, abit of a pita job. I'd recommend changing the crankshaft oil seal at the same time, my kits don't come with them.

Also get the bottom pulley bolt extra tight as it isn't on a keyway so if it comes loose will ruin the engine!

is there anywhere you recommend for parts i found a site before where you could order off the workshop diagrams but can't recall what its called

I'm reasonably sure that I've read somewhere official-looking that you omit the top chain guide when replacing the chain kit on this engine. I'll see if I can find it again. (Perhaps they have a habit of breaking up, and don't do much?).

You can look up part numbers here: www.partscats.info

Can't order anything off there though AFAIK. Dealership or TPS for genuine bits. A few dealerships do mail-order.

Any photos of the process would be appreciated by those of us who haven't had a go at this yet.

Best of luck with it.

Try eurocarparts website.

The top guide is also an oil feed for the chain iirc, it has a small pinhole at the very top where the chain runs over.

OK I found it again, it doesn't say to omit it, but "Sliding block is also not applicable as a replacement part". Not clear whether that means omit, not available or what?

Item 38 here : http://workshop-manuals.com/skoda/fabia-mk1/power_unit/12/40;_47_kw_mpi_engine/enginecrankshaft_group_pistons/disassembling_and_assembling_engine/valve_control_drive_summary_of_components/for_engines_with_identification_characters_azq_bme/

Edit: If you try to look up the part number for that 'sliding block' you just get "discontinued part". Strange. Could do with a chat to someone at Skoda.

omit would be a good option as the bolt has sheared saves a lot of time i will have to order a few parts through the dealer so will see what they say when i give them the item number.

got the guide pins today and they have discontinued the sliding block and they told me it would only be discontinued if it was no longer needed.

i have removed the guides and the chain and found the middle mounting pin on the right has sheared off.

If if isn't being replaced I would at least check the hole to see of it's clear for the oil feed.

This seems to be the oil hole:

Is that what you were describing, hutchysrs50 ?

Hmm, looks different to mine, I think I kept the old kit in the garage so can check when I get a chance. I wouldn't worry to much about it though.
