plastic in sump

there is a tiny pin hole that looks like it runs right through.

any ideas on removing the rest of the guide pin?

Just all the usual methods. I'd use my snap-on chisels and punch set with a hammer and try knocking the threads round.

Other way could be to drill it out or drill a smaller hole in it and hammer a torx bit in and wind that out or put an easy out in, just depends what tools and equipment you have access to.

was thinking of drilling with an angle drill and then using a stud extractor was going to work up in sizes. i have some torx bits from before for just that purpose.

got the chain back on and all seemed well started the car and there is a misfire on cylinder 2. what is the chance the valves are damaged.

i have swapped the coil packs over and its still missing on cylinder 2.

Compression test will probably be conclusive if cyl. 2 comes out low.

May even be able to hear unevenness during cranking? Does it seem to 'lurch' round a bit when the starter motor's running?

Chances are high since the timing side of the engine has failed.

A basic compression test should reveal any issues.

Removed cylinder today and removed valves and there are 2 obvious bent valves (inlet). What's a reliable way to test the others.

Also while I'm here what else is worth checking on the engine.

I guess if you spin each valve with just the top of the stem in a drill or lathe chuck, you'll soon see any wobble if any of the others have subtle bends.

In your position I'd definitely be fitting new valve stem seals and lapping all the valves in, paying particular attention to the exhaust valve seats, which are most likely to be a bit pitted/worn.  Maybe even consider getting new valve guides fitted if you find there's a lot of wear on those?

Edit: It's a bit late for me to have noticed this, but in your list of bits that came in your chain kit, you don't mention the tensioner? That wouldn't be something I'd want to re-use on one of these engines.

Did you do a compression test to check the other two cylinders before removing the head?

  • Author

sorry yes the chain kit did come with a tensioner. all the exhaust valves looked good but would definitely need a clean. would you fit new seals all the way round iv never experienced any smoke.

i never had chance to check compression.

i did think of the drill but wasn't sure. i rolled the others on a flat surface and there was defiantly two bad ones but wanted a more precise way to test the others.

depending on the cost and stock i might get all 6 inlet.

also thanks for all the help so far

Yep, while it's all apart it would be a mistake not to fit new stem seals, I think.  At the mileage you're at they may have a bit of life left in them, but they're more than ten years old now, so are surely getting to the point of being stiff and non-compliant.  Catalytic converters can conceal small amounts of oil burning, 'cos they may be able to fully burn the oil smoke emerging from the exhaust ports and leave the tailpipe gases looking clean.  But that just conceals the symptom, and potentially hastens the death of the cat too.

Glad to hear that the tensioner got replaced. :sun:

definatly get the valve guides replaced now you have it off, they are very very prone to wear and I suspect if you refit one of the valves into the guide you will see visable play.

they are cheap enough and simple enough to do now it is apart.

you will be a bit annoyed if in 6 months time it develops the famous missfire on idle due to worn guides.

Got the valves and the seals today . have lapped the valves in just need to give the head a really good clean and fit the seals.

Engine is all back together and running with no warning lights.

Nice work :)

Nice one.   B)

Glad to hear! Sounds like it's been abit of a tricky one.

Hasn't been the most straight forward will definitely change the chain /belt sooner rather than later next time.
