D2S Xenon bulb upgrade.

Featured Replies

Although the Xenons lights are bright, I've never liked the greeny yellow light it's produced after the initial fire-up (besides, they don't match my xenon white LED sidelights!). :D

So I went on a quest to change the colour temperature of the xenons. The standard ones are Philips 4300K(Kelvin) & I've upgraded to 6000K ones. Thes produce just as much white light, but with a slight hint of blue. 8000K ones are available & appear light purple, but anything past 6000K & you start to lose the light output.

They really do look nice, even in the daylight. Haven't tested them in the dark yet.

"Where did you get them from?" I hear you cry!

Well, lets just say they're cheaper from across the pond!

Tested them in the dark last night.

They're just as bright as the standard ones with a nice bluey tint, pretty much like the new BMWs & Mercs.

I need to get the height adjusted, as they seem to be set at the lowest setting ATM.

Maybe adjust the actual sensor on the rear axle as well (as Josh mentioned in his thread).

Anybody with VAG-COM in the Cleveland/North Yorkshire area?

Can you give us a link to where you got them??

How dou you change the main beam bulbs? It looks impossible

I'd be inclined to get some clear indicator bulbs too

They are!!!

Normally don't reflect as much orange as in the pics.

Got them in the States whilst I was out there.

Not impossible, but very tricky & will need a lot of patience (and scraped knuckles are guaranteed!). :D

Once the back covers are off it's pretty simple (well, not really!), but I've changed the side lights so many times that I've got the hang of it now.

Before you do anything, unplug the power connector from the ballasts.

It's advisable to remove all the plastic covers around the battery to gain a little more space.

Remove the ballasts fom there housings (N/S is screwed on to the back of the headlamp & O/S is clipped to the underside of the slam panel) & then turn the bulb connectors until they unlock from the bulbs. This will be a bit fiddly beacuse the back covers will get in the way.

The bulbs are held in with locking rings which are in tight. Turn to unlock & pull both the ring & bulb out of the lamp.

Refitting is reverse of removal!!! :D

The locking ring will need a tiny amount grease to get it back on the lamp.

I would have liked to have taken pics whilst do this, but I didn't have it with me! :(
