Weird 'hooting' noise from brakes/wheel

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Having issues with what I think is my rear passenger side break/wheel.

It makes a sort of hooting noise at low speeds (below 15mph) , I can't really hear it at all above that, maybe due to road noise I'm not sure.

It seems to sound louder when turning right too.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Ben.

Feel the wheel after a run. Hot? Hotter than other side?

Sticking caliper. A common problem on these.

Clean it all up and fit return springs and you should be golden!

+1 for return springs.

Few quid each from local VAG dealership and fitted as standard to any the other models that use the same calipers. When applying brake, the caliper closes against the spring, so when you ease off the pedal the spring pushes the caliper back out again.  With no spring there as standard on the Fabia there's nothing to force the caliper back off the disc so it sometimes just stays there and binds lightly on the disk.

A quick read through this thread:  http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/137832-handbrake-cable-issue-on-my-vrs/   should find you the right part numbers to give to the dealership and instructions on fitting (read to the end).  They're relatively easy to fit and certainly need no specialist tools or equipment.  Got rid of a similar noise on mine and also stopped the handbrake slipping, which it did once, which was bloody terrifying ;)

Thank you both for the advice. I have a pair of these lying around and have been meaning to fit them! I shall get them fitted over the weekend and hopefully that will clear the problem!

That and then sort my clunking suspension out and I'll be noise free!

Is there an owl stuck in your brakes? ;) on a more serious note any seeping etc around the calliper?

Haha it's driving me crazy! not that I can see/feel. It looks to me like the pads are more or less touching the disc, which might be causing it? similar to a squeak on the front?

Check tyre wear pattern, compare to opposite side..

One of my rear tyres was making a din so replaced and noise stopped immediately.

Wear pattern was excessively wore in patches of tyre, around the whole circumference of the tyre.

Thanks for this. The rear tyres are due a change so that does make sense. I'll get some ordered from camskill today.

Had the rear tyres replaced today and the noise has disappeared! Thanks for all the help. Hopefully this will help people in the future if they search for a similar issue.
