Brake Options

Some have upgraded pads and discs and some have gone from complete setups. My pads are now 80% worn after 40,000 miles of fairly hard driving so just thinking what are my options. I'd love a new setup eventually once I can decide on that but what are my disc and pas options now? Don't want anything that billows out brake dust.

Did you get the plugs changed and were they looking OK.

Was the price to have them change them good ?

Both were fine....

I have found the yellowstuff pads on standard discs do well on the track , and have awesome feel too, massive improvement over standard :) and litte hassle or big cost... cheap and useful upgrade :)

 

edit: my insurance didn't care either :)

 

well done on getting 80% worn at 40k, I wasn't even 50% worn at 50k on my old one! lol....

Yeps, I fitted EBC Yellow Stuff ones based on Dave's recommendation and really happy with them now...:)

I wouldn't buy EBC because they are about the only company that glue the pads to the backing rather than mould them together and I've heard of Green and Red ones failing by coming unglued.

 

Yellow stuff are supposed to be OK though and "He who rides sharks" seems impressed and has used them on numerous track days without issue.

I think thats what they "used to be like" Boss...... apparently they have improved! as most things though I will probably just go on my own experiances! lol.....

I remember a few years ago that EBC pads were being pushed by local motor factors but weren't any good. Friend of mine bought a set and found they didn't stop his Astra VXR any better but the brake dust was awful. Perhaps things have changed.

Is EBC the only option? What about complete setups? I know the 312mm go and I still have those from my Mk1. But I'm torn between just buying better pads and changing fluid for now and saving up for a beefier setup in a few months. No idea what to get though

And as for the brake wear I'm a bit surprised. I do drive hard and it's seen the track a few times but the last few months with the new job I'm driving to work at 4am for 52 miles one way, no traffic and while I've been making progress I've never been one for braking a lot. Now I know the roads I set the corner entry speed and carry it through. I'm only braking hard when I really have to.

any bigger brakes are heaver, and will compromise performance...... if you get heaver brakes that have better stopping power and your tyres don't have as much grip, you loose. I have not broken yellowstuff pads performance yet....... maybe if I have more power!

Do you have a link for the ones you bought? Mines going back to Skoda for a brake fluid change so they can stick them in then.

 

Was a bit concening this morning when I was driving to work, making decent time when the dash make a high pitched beeping and brake fluid warnings come up. The fluid is fine and due for a change in September. Think the car thought it should have had it done the same time as service.

Was the warning not for the pads rather than brake fluid? I would put in better fluid. than a standard fluid you get used at a fluid change for 45 quid. Your fluid is showing lower because the pads have less meat and the pistols are out further.

I ordered Brembo HP2000 pads. Performance spec sheet is rather impressive and they are Brembo of course. I have not tried them yet as on back order, should be with me within 2 weeks, fingers crossed!

They also have a very competitive price of £118 delivered for fronts. I am leaving backs as they are.

I would avoid ebc greenstuff certainly as they have a horrendous failure rate but yellow and red are supposed to be better.

I think the greenstuff failed on dark heros car recently.... but they are supposed be "standard" pads, and he has been tracking it ;) my yellowstuff have stood up to abouse (on 2 different cars!lol)

I would never buy ebc brake pads again after a chunk of the pad material fell off from a set of greenstuff pads I had on my Clio under road use.

I went to have a look at them as they were not really up to much, one was cracked around the bottom edge and the drivers side had a 20p size chunk missing from one end!

Ferrodo ds2500? pads were great but required a bit of filing of the backing material to fit in the calipers!

Yup, not legal for road use in UK so if anybody is running them insurance is automatically invalidated, unless quick change track side lol

thats why i went for yellow stuuf, they conform with legal road requirements (as much retardation as standard pads from cold) and not the more extream one with a higher temp rating..... yellow stuff is 900C :) on telling my insurace comany , they said its fine, no change to premium :) just classed it as a replacement part.

That's why I decide to try Brembo ones :)

I do still have my complete 312mm setup still in a box in the garage. I'll need to strip the paint off and paint them red. And buy new discs and pads just to be safe. That's still an option but I think for now I need to know what pads to get. Brembo, EBC, Pagid, etc. and change the fluid.

you may as well do the 312's with some decent pads, if you already have them mate!
