Turbo whistle

Featured Replies

I've got an -05 Furby vRS with about 12k kilometers on the clock. Lately I've noticed quite loud turbo whistle under moderate to hard acceleration. Is this normal? It happens regardless of gear & speed. You guys reckon I should mention about it at next service interval (due in 3 weeks)?

Was just reading about turbo hose blow off's etc probs with the furbys in the forums.. How would a problem like this show? Could it relate to this whistling noise under acceleration? I'd say it's deffo coming from the turbo.

Anyways, cheers for all the info in advance.

If I pipe came off you'd have no boost.

They all do it.

I get the same - sounds like a whistle/chirp sort of sound. Not the usual turbo sound... and only under hardish acceleration...

I LOVE the whistling that my turbo makes, passengers comment on it too!

im worried about me not hearing it mines either bust or im deaf

Try driving round some terraced streets with the windows open. My friend lives in a terraced area and the sound of the turbo is particularly noticeable here due to the "hemmed in" nature of the streets

Sounds like me and Sonic are on the same boat here. Mine's so loud you can hear it no probs with windows closed and only slightly tuning down volume on the car stereo.

I know turbos do whistle a bit, this is just imho a bit excessive. Should propably do a comparison on my brother's car. He's also got a vRS.. maybe also mention it at next service.

Cheers,

Juha

even with the windows down and stereo off couldnt hear much.

will try a terraced street later possibly

Mine does it 1500-2500 rpm and you can hear it even with windows closed in an open area. Does it even more when I boot it.

Love it

By all means mention it but it sounds completely normal.

Yeh, I like it too. Was just a bit worried it'd be something abnormal. First turbo car for me , so a bit n00b. Gives you a nice sense of power...

Even superchargers do the whistle thing...when I had the MCS works, it sounded like an aeroplane when you switched off the car...

Hi to all

I just wonder if you get variation from car to car. The one I test drove had no audible turbo whistle at all with the windows up (I drove it around all road types and everything from traffick trickling to full chat) and I would hope my new one arrives equally quiet. The only sound from the induction system was a very slight whoosh as the turbo spooled up from idle. Turbo whistle may sound nice for a shot while, but ask anyone who has had to do a long motorway journey whith a noisy turbo how fatiguing that high pitched whislt becomes after an hour or two.

Chris

PS, if the car was quiet and then got noisy, I would report the change for investigation.

Don't worry. The turbo whistles when it's wound up and when it's given some stick the whistling is more like a screech kind of noise.

I've driven four different vrs and they have all done it with the windows closed too.

To be honest, once your cruising on the motorway you don't really notice it that much, more round town or in enclosed areas. (try revving in a Mcdonalds drive thru!)

mine really dont screech !! **** cant record it either hum

I am glad you think it is a screech as that is exactly what mine sounds like, nothing like a whistle, i thought my bearings where going.

The turbo only does it as the engine is overfuelling and the variable-vane bit of the turbo channelling more air and trying to keep up. Unless you managed to continually accelerate without exceeding about 3krpm it would stop or get drowned out by engine noise.

You tend not to notice it in higher gears as the road noise increases.

I can only really the turbo with the windows open at 1500 to 2500 rpm. If you really give it some beans then it does a sort of chirrup noise. Car is just over 2 months old with 2000 miles on it.

I can't hear it at motorway speeds, whereas I could on a Peugeot 306 DTurbo I owned previously when it was doing 80+mph (about 2900rpm). The worst offender I've driven was a mate's 206 DTurbo HDI. Turbo made a constant screech at 70mph+ and it really got on my nerves! From in the car it sounded like the turbo was right inside the glovebox!

I'm with the deaf crowd on this one.

Just a little chirrup at best :)

You should here it scream away on scatter rallies, when it's hot it's like a wailing banshee howling through the countryside.

To make this clear from my part, I only hear it when I accelerate and even then I hear it when I give it moderate to hard boot. At steady pace no matter what the revs or gear, there's no continuous whistle or chirp or whatever. So no worries about loosing your mind over it. I was merely checking up wether everybody else hears this while accelerating.

Long story short, new buyers shouldn't worry about it.

Hi Juha

I am glad of the reassurance on this. I certainly dont mind a bit of a whistle when the turbo is spooling up, but if it were continuous noise at cruising speed it would drive me nuts. I never owned a Supra twin turbo for this reason. At constant motorway speeds, the larger turbo seemed to idle and whistle intrusively and continously. Kind of ruined an otherwise excellent car.

There has been quite a bit of reasearch on long term (occupational) exposure to high frequency and ultrasound, showing associations with fatigue and depression. A place I worked used to run ultrasonic welders, and a day on the floor with them was quite tiring. Only years later when the research was published did it make sense as to why.

Chris

drive through a tunnel... then you should hear it.:-)

I noticed that green filter made my turbo a bit more noticable, still too quiet for my liking though.. :) btw, air temperature may also affect esp. during winter time you can hear the turbo much better than on warm summer day..
