Centre cap removal tool?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm just wondering how the heck you use the centre cap removal tool that comes with the car?

Looking online there is mention of a hole in the centre caps that you put the end of the removal tool into so as to then remove the wheel's centre cap but looking at the ones on my 2010 Superb Elegance i can't for the life of me see a hole in the centre cap.

Am I missing something or does the tool not work on the centre caps used by Skoda?

To be honest I can drill them if needed and then use the removal tool as I'm replacing them with the new look ones but i just wanted to check it wasn't just me missing something very obvious first. :)

Cheers

Dave.

I would have thought you would take the wheel off, put a thick piece of dowel through the hole from tne inside and hit the other end of tne dowel with a mallet/hammer?

I know if I had the wheels off i would use that method but I'm wondering why they put the tool in the car if you can't actually use it?

I'm not talking about the wheelnut cover removal tool either..... This is the one that is a piece of wire with a hoop at one end and a hook at the other that is located under the boot floor with the spare wheel or inflation kit.

I see what you mean Dave. Can't say I've seen a tool like that in my octy boot, I've just had a look at my neptunes but there's no hole in the centre cap either, so it would mean trying to prise the Ali facinf disc off the actual centre cap which could damage either the alloy or the disc which seems a bit pointless? Perhaps things are different on the Superb?

Think I'll just drill a pilot hole in each one and then use a self tapper and pliers to then pull each one off then just pop the new ones on.

The hole and wire setup is for wheels where the centre cap covers the wheel nots as well as the wheel centre. Ie a mini wheel trim

Strange that they still put them in cars that don't have those style covers then.

give it a go by all means Dave, but they may well be a real tight fit now if there's any corrosion between the caps and the wheel and couldrbe a real pita to get them off from the front, but best of luck.

It's a standard toolkit for all vag cars. And the wire doubles up as a wheel nut dust cap remover on vw golfs which have a different style cap

Yup. Im with BrianPilman on this.

Iv no use for mine in my fabia, but audis tend to have the hub cover that covers the wheel nuts too. So it would be useful for them.

Did a bit of work at an Audi dealers! That's what they're used for! The centre caps that cover wheel nuts!

For all the stress of it, why not use it as an excuse to whip wheels off, and copper grease the faces?  :)  Then swap wheel centres.

Exactly as the two different types of metals corrode together so get a copper mallet or if it's up on a ramp hit the bottom of wheel to shock it, remove, copper grease and bolt up again!

lol I'd love to just pop the wheels off but seeing as the original owner went for the puncture kit rather than a spare wheel i have nothing to jack the car up with. ;)

No worries guys..... I may have to nip back to the dealers anyway as the centre caps they have given me have a slightly different part number (Ends in ULM rather than the FOD everyone mentions on here) so if they have the FOD one's in stock aswell as the one's they've given me i'll need to pass a Halfrauds who happen to have a trolley jack on offer down to £29. I've been meaning to get hold of one for a year or two now so this might be the excuse to do it. :)

Yeah do it! I've always hated scissor jacks ever since my Fabia fell off it!

Have you got a wheel brace as I didn't get one with my can of gunge and compressor. ?...

Didn't want you getting back from Halfords with your new jack then thinking **** I haven't got anything to undo the wheel bolts with!

I know what tool you're talking about, I thought it was to remove the tow eye cover at the front :D.

The way I got my centre caps out was just to push them from the inside, popped out easily enough.

I thought that tool was for removing the metal ring inside the centre caps.

Take the wheel off give it a clean if you like and use a screwdriver and mallet to knock the centre caps out
