Learner's Insurance

Featured Replies

The Mrs is 29 now, and has finally decided she will learn to drive. So we've been shopping around for insurance (her own policy) for a Citigo. As she's 29 she's not eligible for many of the specific learner's insurance places that do cheap insurance until you pass. And obviously she's only got a provisional license so it's never going to be 'cheap'.

But the high-end was over £3,000! For a 1.0 Citigo!

Some shopping had us signing, an identical policy, on the line at £300.

That's a tenfold difference!

I just found it an insane concept to get my head around when looking into it.

Yeah, there's no real reason or point to this post. I just wanted to rant a little.

Cheers.

That's ridiculous, makes you wonder how many people either see the first price and are scared off or pay some ungodly amount just to get on the road.

Unfortunately if a company is offering over £3,000 for insurance, then they're not interested in your business. It's a way to put you off without outright refusing you.

It worked :D

My insurance is up for renewal soon.

Quoted £2000 over the phone for renewal with admiral.

Went online to admirals own website.. £900.

And on confused.com.. £700.

Same company, Same policy, 3 different prices. Madness.  :swear:

Exactly.

It avoids you having to answer Yes to the question "Has any Insurer refused  etc. etc."

Just had the annual and most hateful ringing around and quotes online merry go 'round time wasting scenario here, and whacked hundreds off the insurance premiums on the fleet.

Wish there was an easier and more transparent system than this

I'm assuming if she's provisional she hasn't passed the test

Just be prepared when she does for the insurance to go up when you let the insurers know

I assumed when Swmbo passed I'd be due some money back - passed the test, better driver right?

But no.now she'll be driving unaccompanied so is now a risk

That'll be another £70 sir

They'll still have you by the short n curlies it appears!

So has she insured a Car she is the Registered Keeper of & the Main Driver with a Provisional Licence, & with another Named Driver,

 for only £300,

or have i misunderstood.?

Can you share the Name of the Company?

Yes, she's just bought a 2nd hand Citigo to both learn in and use as a daily driver once she's passed (she's a primary teacher and needs something reliable but cheap) So she's registered keeper and policy holder with me as a named driver (32, 10 years no claims, no points). Plan is for her to have an intensive set of lessons over the school holidays and pass for September.

Cheapest prices came from Elephant and Admiral (direct - seems they were more via comparison sites).

I was quite surprised at the price in the end. I was expecting more due to the provisional licence. But as Dazz says it'll probably go up once she passes and not much we can do at that point, so budgeting now.

Had similar with my car, was with priviledge for 2 years, got my renewal at £800 quid, went for "online merry-go round" (like that teminology) and got it for around £420 quid, I don't understand Car Insurance!

I had my brother on my policy whilst he was learning to drive, increased it by only £300 which wasn't to bad. Sadly however when he past his test it was a different story, it doubled the provisional price!!

Shopping around helps this year went from an eye watering £980 (renewal figure with current insurer) to £375 a year. For a Skoda Citigo.

Still could be worse no one will insure my other half, so looks like I'll be doing all the driving lol.
