Should I swap Octavia 1.2 TSI SE for a 1.6 TDI Elegance

Featured Replies

I have just loved my 10 months old Octavia 1.2 TSI SE in black. The dealer contacted me as I showed little bit interest in the TDI Octavia in Elegance spec. He has found an Elegance 1.6 TDI manual in silver with leather seats, front heated seats and a spare wheel. This will cost me an extra £100 every month with a straight swap (no deposit). Few things I wanted to ask you guys;

1. Is it worth buying a diesel over a petrol engine. So far I am pretty impressed with the performance of a little 1.2 engine. I am averaging 56 MPG ( i have a light right foot)

2. I will lose the 0% PCP and 3 free services

3. I will lose few extras on my current car (door protector, door sills, tinted windows, boot protector)

4. I do around 1000 miles per month and I am aware of DPF clogging

5. Will i save money in a longer run (running cost and residual)

I would really appreciate if you could help me with this.

Saurabh

Look at what people are getting on fuelly fir that engine, I doubt you'd save all that much if you are getting 56mpg already. Don't think the 1.6 diesel is all that much more powerful than the 1.2 is it?

On fuelly people are not getting more than 50-60 MPG. I can surely live without the leather heated seats and the built in sat nav however fuel consumption was my biggest priority.

The 1.6 isn't really all that much better in fuel economy real world than the 2.0 from what I can tell. I'd stick to what you've got if you're happy with it.

Keep the 1.2. I have a 1.6tdi which is averaging 52.6mpg over 5000 miles in 3 months (fuelly figures).

I personally like the 1.6, find it good to drive, quiet and smooth for a diesel, ample power etc.

If your going to pay an extra £100/month all you will get is whatever options an elegance has over an SE - pretty much different wheels, a centre front arm rest and cruise control.

You won't recoup the £100/month in fuel savings that's for sure. Real term depreciation will probably be better than you're expecting on the 1.2 as people will be aware how good they are in a couple of years time.

£100 per month buys a lot of fuel, or doughnuts, beer etc, plus you then have to pay for the 3 services.  You would really want the extra spec of the Elegance to pay so much, especially as you are unlikely to better the mpg you are already getting and remember that diesel costs more per litre than good old petrol.

I suspect the dealer is only looking to his own profit margins and may even have a buyer lined up for your motor at a significant profit.

Id expect at least 10mpg more from a 1.6TDI, once the engine had run in.

However 12,000 miles per anum is probably still in petrol territory cost wise.

Question really, as others have said, is do you want the extra spec of an Elegance? (do you want SatNav, cruise, armrest etc etc?) Also, is cost a major concern?

If you dont necessarily want the extra spec, and cost is of a concern, then stick with the 1.2TSI. Especially as you say you would lose the free services.

However if you do want the extra spec, then that extra £100 per month isnt so bad afterall. It would still be a close call though, because as i said, 12,000 per year isnt a lot.

Thanks guys. With all the comments I have been getting I am pretty much sure that I shall be sticking with my 1.2. As per extras are concerned, I did add centre arm rest, cruise control to my SE. So, I will be paying extra for leather heated seats, big alloys and sat nav really. Even 10MPG more wouldn't even break even the extra cost with the number of miles I will be doing. Cheers fellas.

1.  If you are impressed with the 1.2 then no need to move over to the diesel.

2.  These are valuable cost benefits - sounds expensive losing them

3.  Negotiate these extras for free on the new car

4.  I do 500 miles per month and have no DPF issues

5.  Chopping a new car in after a few months ownership will NOT save money in the longer run

All the best.

OP, dealers NEVER call you when a deal is in your best interest obviously, you & I noticed the 0%, 3 years free servicing, assure and Sat Nav updates offer and struck that deal.

I don't expect a dealer to call me the next time as good an offer is available, niether do I expect them to tell me "you've paid over 1/2 your finance so, just hand this one back and get a new one interest free again" although, given half a chance thats just what'll do.

Well if you already have Cruise and centre armrest, its pretty much a no brainer. Especially as youve said, you arent bothered by the heated seats etc etc.

Id suggest no.

The 1.2 TSi is probably a touch quicker than the 1.6 and arguably nicer to punt along....just is not as economical.

Elegance spec is admittedly a bit nicer/more comprehensive than SE but you'll be paying alot more money for arguably not alot more car. If you were talking a swap for similar or slightly more than you pay now then it would make more sense but £100/month more, not a chance.

Finally I said no to the dealer. He was quite shoked to hear NO...

He thought he had a sale!

You already have the best parts or the Elegance spec, so why pay £100 extra per month? You certainly wont save that in fuel and tax costs. Not on your mileage.

I echo what everyone else has said. I've ordered an Elegance 2.0TDI (arrives in the next few days) and will be paying £212 brand new with the 3 years servicing. I cant help but think that for £100 more than you are paying is going to be higher than that figure. The 1.2 with your use seems to be more than ample and has plenty of kit that means you're not missing out on much. Out of interest what figure has the stealer offered for this 'deal'?

I have been paying £155 every month (deposit paid £5200, car was £17700). With a straight swap for the elegance he quoted me £275. So another £120 every month for different alloys, 1.6 engine, leather seats and satnav. No free service.

No brainer non deal then, I'll be paying as above with a 3.5k deposit. I also will be getting metallic paint and the winter pack at that price. Sounds like the dealer just wants you to think it's a good deal to tick a box and make a bit more of a profit. At this stage in the year the dealer is probably just gunning to hit their sales target and trying it on with most customers to see who bites.

Cheers for your comments fella. Have many happy miles with your Octy... :-)
