After seeing the episode of TOP GEAR where they travel across Europe to find the greatest road to drive on.

Wondering what you guys think is Britains greatest driving road/route that would put the biggest grin on your face[emoji16]

Would love to hear your input on this.

As summer is here (ish) plan to take a roadtrip somewhere and will choose the one that's been mentioned the most.

Please dont say M25[emoji87]

(apologies if this has been done already but can't see to find one, and this is probably my first proper thread on here if it ever gets started)

Applecross is meant to be up there among the greats.

A couple of sites that might give you some inspiration.

We spent a week at a cottage near Cwmystwyth on the Elan Valley route and the roads around that area are great for driving. There have been one or two Brisky meets/drives there as well.

The A470 from Mallwyd to the Cross Foxes pub. Great scenery, smooth tarmac and lots of long turns

The roads in the Rhayader and Llangurig area are great roads! Heading up along them today in fact :)

The road to Applecross is a very scenic run as long as there is no fog but I wouldn't class it as a great driving road.

Now living in Scourie, Sutherland. but long before I came here I was in love with the 100 mile drive from Inverness through Ullapool and on up to Scourie. I'm now aged 69 but just sold off my second G40.  I used to give this road stick( still do in the old Octavia) and it offers everything to make a memorable drive. Scenery goes from mundane to breathtaking, road surface is getting a bit poor, but the road itself is a delightfully challenging proposition for anyone who likes a spirited drive. Long fast straights with sweeping curves, tight reversed camber bends, steep climbs with consequent plunging descents, rocks, sheep, deer, cyclists, motorcyclists of all nationalities doing crazy things, tourists rubbernecking at everything at 40mph it's all there.

Come out early in a summer's morning though, before the aforementioned human element is on the road and I promise you driver's heaven.

^ +1.  Oh yes!  Anything between Kylesku and Durness.

A couple more suggestions:

In the Lakes, the Wrynose-Hardknott Passes, preferably out of season and without the buses.  Particularly the summits where you have to remember which way the road goes next, 'cos you can't see it anymore.

In Cornwall, that little cameo stretch of the A39 along the River Allen valley from St Teath to St Kew Highway.

Pickering to Whitby across the North Yorkshire Moors, fantastic road with great curves[emoji33]

Regards all

Juan

I agree with gnut, some stunning roads on the west coast, went round from where I live in thurso all down the scenic coastal routes along the west coast across to skye and down to Fort William. Didn't go to Applecross, but the A832 and 896 where pretty stunning in parts. Strangely I did stay in Scourie for a night on route.

For scenery the pass at GLencoe is amazing, but most of the roads up here are, I'm sure the A9 would be if you took away the trucks/ caravans and I didn't have to go on it to get anywhere...

A4069 over the Brecons is pretty excellent, but I don't know that it could be classed among the best.

Evo triangle?

We did this on Scoobynet about 15 years ago, mostly for Wales but I've also done tours around Scotland, Lakes, North Yorkshire and back home in the East Midlands :D

My particualr favourite Welsh circuit is as follows: From Telford, A4169 to Much Wenlock. B4371 to Church Stretton, short hop down the A49 then turn right B4370 to A489.

From here turn right and head west before taking the B4383 left toward Bishops Castle. Then take the A488 south, slow through Clun, to Knighton. Left/Right to continue south on the A488 to Penybont (watch out for suicidal sheep!) then left on the A44 to the Fforest Inn. Turn right here for the glorious A481, lunch @ the Hundred House Inn? :)

Continue SouthWest to Builth Wells then through the town to pick up the B4520 up onto Epynt. Turn right (MOD permitting) onto the B4519 across the range to Garth. Left onto the A483, this is a great road all the way down Llandovery, but for this run turn right at Beulah onto the B4358 to Newbridge on Wye. Turn left up the A470 to Rhayader then B4518 to Llanidloes then pick up the same road north via Staylittle/Llyn Clywedog (rollercoaster of a road!) to Llanbrynmair.

Various options from here but if heading back towards the Midlands A470/A489 via Newtown to Church Stoke, left onto A490 the right onto B4386 back towards Shrewsbury bypass.

That should keep you entertained for a day! :D

Oh yes!

The section between Newbridge on Wye and Beulah has to be one of the finest most challenging bits of tarmac in the UK. I'm amazed there aren't more car shaped holes in the roof of a house that's positioned on the apex of a blind uphill right hander on the brow of a hill, with house roof being almost level with the tarmac. It's stunning scenery too, makes me laugh out loud every time I commute across mid Wales.

For me personally - I would have to say driving through the West Coast of Scotland (Inveraray / Mallaig / Ardnamurchan) - very scenic and lots of twisty turny roads
