Are there any good diesel engines?

Featured Replies

It has never been resolved. Cars are still failing. Its an inherant issue to all n47 engines

The part may be revised but can still fail

Most of the info on the web seems to point to engines with the codes N47D20A & N47D20D built between 2007 and 2009. Cases involving engines built after this seem to have declined quite markedly, so the design changes BMW introduced appear to have had a significant effect, even though there may still be the odd failure.

Clearly the engine did have a problem but as is often the case, simply consulting the web tends to overstate a point as those who don't have problems rarely post to say "everything's fine".

After the 535d I don't think I can go backwards, I have pretty much made my mind up it will be another bmw an audi or a merc, call me a badge snob if you like but I'm not paying for it so I might as well!!!!! Economy isn't really a concern to me either I just want a little excitement

Agreed on that one

Do a Clarkson then. Buy the Audi with the "Ludicrous" diesel engine.

More sensibly, get an A5 V6 - though they sound better with a decent zorst. I wouldn't know if you have to de-DPF to get it to sound good though.

Many on youtube.

don't alpina do some diesels now? could be an interesting way to go?

I think I will go test drive an e350 and see how it measures up, I actually really like the look of the e class

R.e. The N47 chains. I've done my research and from what I can tell it is problem but there is a huge number of those engines sold in various models and the ratio of knackered chains is low overall. You'll never get an official figure though as BMW don't like to admit it happens.

That's what I keep repeating to myself anyway lol

All cars seem to have a weak point, I suppose it's a case of finding the car with the cheapest. I would imagine Honda engines are solid but then your lumbered with the rest of the car.

Company car on Lease,

it is not yours and its reliability after the Warranty Expires is hardly a worry for the person picking it up from new.

then handing it back,

& If it breaks have them collect it and drop off the courtesy car,

or what ever your chosen dealer or Manufacturer does.

If a BMW is Unreliable or too low rent, then get a Merc, Audi, Jag , Lexus or what other supposed primium brand suits your likes.

If you are Getting a Company Car and end up owning it then you know what you like, or need to buy.

Or go the safe way and buy these Horrible & Gastly Japanese & Far Eastern Rep Mobiles & Company Car type Vehicles.

After all it does what it says on the tin.

Company Car Driver, in the car on their own driving for the Company.

Most bigger diesel vehicles whether they are Prestige, sporty, or just budget motorway mile munchers under 3-4 years on the road are that anyway.

If you have bought and own it, then usually people buy on stuff like, if they are keeping it for a long time, caring for it and looking after,

or it is just a means of transport & what they could afford or wanted to own.

Cheek! it has it's charms. But 'sparking, peppy, eager, nimble' aren't adjectives I'd use.

Sorry didn't realise you had one :x  you can take comfort in the fact that the same applies, to Renault, Pugeot etc etc.

But not BMW of course  :giggle:

A couple across the road from my sister has a 3 someting something BMW estate or whatever pretentious name they gave shooting brakes, maybe Hauptbahnhofswagon. Sports a very obvious ALPINA badge. I must lay in wait and ask about it when I see them.

It being on German plates and I am not a BMW anorak, I can't tell how old it is. I do know its white though.

ALPINAS well genuine ones are usually rather fruity

Dependant on what the op wants timescale wise etc there's the new passat coming out based on the mqb platform with a 240ish bi turbo diesel, that's what I'm wanting to replace the vrs tdi with.

Octavia VRS Diesel ?

Audi V6 Diesel engines are weapons, map to near 300hp and 400fpt.

If only we got Diesel V8 Mercs or the Impreza Boxer Diesel. Both of which don't sound like Diesel's at all.

I am due a new company car and it unfortunately has to be a diseasal, question is are there any good ones?

No, they are all awful  :bandit:

Hope that helps

after having a go in the e class and a 3.0 a6 tdi I am inclined to agree with you

Anybody any experience of the biggest Mercedes diesels? I quite like the e class and the cls to look at.

They are linked to auto boxes that IMHO are awful and always at the wrong gear.

You have a 535d.... The 3.0 6-pot BMW diesel is the best diesel on the market so if not happy with that I really think you'll struggle to get anything that lights your fire to be honest. :-)
