Are there any good diesel engines?

Loads. What budget? Honda for starters.

Share George's sentiments, plenty of blinders out there dependent upon requirement and budget.

Most diesels are very good, I have had diesel cars now from 1995, Peugeot 1.7 turbo, then 2.0 HDi, moved onto VW PD 1.9 TDi, then a Mitsubishi Grandi DiD, Audi 2.0 CR and then a Yeti CR 170, I now have a 116d BMW and a 330d BMW, all engines offer a good package of performance and economy.

If you choose your diesel on its CO rating you can save yourself a lot of money on your BIK/TAX.

Go and get some test drives done, the new VAG diesel is 180 bhp+ with CO emissions of 108g.

Can't you drop a GTD unit into your Mk2? :D

I would but you really don't want to know how much that abf has cost me, if I changed my mind now I think my wife would divorce me!!!! And I doubt my boss would 2 ant me turning up to customers in a 27 year old golf.

Meh, individuality is king imho, i've used mine a couple of times for work and it got good reception. I thought the ABF conversion was pretty much plug and play?

To be honest if the mrs had any idea how much I spend on the cars my testicles would be in her bedside table. She is yet to discover I purchased a T25 panel van yesterday morning...

You are asking the wrong question.

You should be asking are there any Bad ones.

I cant think of any in the last 15 years that have had any more issues than petrol engines to be honest.

The diesel lump in the transporter Sportline I've got for the weekend! Great van great engine :)

The current bmw n47 4 cylinder 2 litre diesel is pretty much the perfect balance between performance and running costs.

Audi A 3 with either of the 2.0 tdi engines on a manual box is nice.

Anybody any experience of the biggest Mercedes diesels? I quite like the e class and the cls to look at.

The N47 is a lemon in similar style to the 1.4tsi of VAG

Google N47 timing chain failure

That situation was resolved in 2009, so probably not relevant to OP (assuming he's getting a new car).

Audi BiTD is well liked and in the A7 makes for a serious cross continent express, though perhaps without the handling characteristics of his current 5 series.

Was going to suggest Merc. I think their smaller engines are shared with Peugeot etc but not completely sure. The middle sized lumps 220D, 250D seem to hit the sweet spot with economy and power. The 350D seems to be up against the 335d so likes a drink.

I've a Honda 2.2DTEC, It's very smooth but not particularly powerful or economical. Allegedly less prone to DPF issues than some. I get about 46mpg with it which on paper is nothing special but it is a  big car and I was coming from 34mpg (at best) with a VRS so anything was an improvement.

Dare I say it.. the 1.5Dci from Renault is a good little engine, the car attached to it is probably ****e but the engine is good.

I think It;s Renault not Peugeot.

It has never been resolved. Cars are still failing. Its an inherant issue to all n47 engines

The part may be revised but can still fail
