Hi.

Just had my car's first MOT. There's an advisory that the front pads are getting thin, and the recommendation is to replace the discs at the same time. Is this Skoda standard practice, or are they fishing for extra work?

I'm likely to go to an independent for this (or even Kwikfit as they then offer free pads for life) but I'm just curious about replacing discs as a matter of course.

Car is an SE plus Tsi 86 estate.

I would see it as good practice but not essential.  Given the parts from Eurocarparts, Carparts4less or a Motor factors will be much cheaper than dealer supplied, I would usually look to source the parts and then take them to an independant to fit.

 

Without getting 'mates rates' from my friend who usually services my car I got a disc and pad change done for either £20/£25 by a decent local independant garage.

I agree with above, I bought my discs and pads only last month from eurocarparts, cost £30 for the discs, and a £10 for the pads,

I fitted them myself and to be honest its easy peasy, took around an hour a side if you like to "self tinker" lol

Brake discs have the min thickness stamped on them so when you take them off you can measure if they are still OK or not. Pads in my experience are being replaced routinely with few thousand miles in the still left...

Main dealers overcharge massively for brake jobs. They are extremely easy to replace on the front. Back ones are slightly more tricky due to hand break but not overly taxing.

Normally, the lip/ridge at the outer edge of disc is a sign that discs need replacing. My Fabia2 1.6 lasted until 70,000 miles before I replaced both discs and pads.

If you think dealer is 'trying it on', ask a mate to look at them through the wheels, doesn't take a minute to check.

N.B. brakes are important, don't skimp!!

Forgive my stupidity, but what is the standard size brake disc for a 2011 Fabia vRS? Is it 256 x 22mm?  Or 288 x 25mm? It's just that Euro Car Parts list more than one size.

Disc won't be replaced unless they are to minimum thickness or very close and are considered to not be able to make it to the next service. You can easily check the disc thickness your self without even taking a wheel off so do it. A Skoda dealer won't rip you off as it's so easy to check, but some of the alternatives will in my experience. It's an easy job, not too expensive. 

How do you check disc thickness without taking a wheel off?

Is a 62reg 288mm too for the fronts.? And the rear?...

I bough 4 Ferodo discs and pads all around for £140.02 at a Motor Factors.

They do the job.

 

Are you changing the Brake Fluid, 

and standard Discs or Upgrading.

Just discs and pads as standard. Car is on 30k I need brake fluid change or should be ok?

If it has not been changed it is 3 years then each 2 by the Service Schedule / Guidelines.  So as well to do.

 

Do you actually need new discs, are they far gone with Corrosion?

To be honest I'm not entirely sure. Pads yes but discs need measuring I think. Don't look corroded but I'm no experT.

Doubtful they need measured unless some Dealership Skimmed them previously.

 

You might well see Corrosion around the outer rim, that is not really an issue,

but if the braking surface was worn or scored you will feel the lip.

 

Get the opinion of someone that knows what they are looking at.
