Roof mounted bike racks

Featured Replies

I'm considering getting a roof mounted bike rack for the Fabia.

I do have a tailgate mounted one (very old), but don't want to put any stress on the roof spoiler.

Just been doing a bit of research on the net & found that Thule have some good designs. Checked out some prices from Halfords & if I went for the roof bars plus 2 bike carriers, it would cost

The Skoda basic roof rack is a nice bit of kit. Once you've built it up (which isnt hard) all you need to do is fit it into the grooves on the roof and tighten using the tool provided. Theres no contact with the body work at all. Definately recommended.

I use a Thule bike rack which clamps onto the downtube of the bike. Its ok, but the bike I have is a bit heavier (Giant AC) so wobbles about a bit. My Dads medium weight hardtail is fine.

Thanks for that.

Might order a set of roof bars from the dealer tomorrow.

Then hunt around for some bargain carriers.

The Skoda roof rack is made by Thule, and all the standard Thule accessories will fit it.

Huh! How come it's cheaper thro' Skoda then?

I have the Skoda roof bars and a top model thule bike carrier (clamps the frame so I don't have to take wheels off). It only takes about 5 mins to to put everything on top of the car and the same again to remove it all. I love the fact I can just put the bike on the rack, strap the wheels on and lock the clamp and I'm ready to roll. Just have to get changed after the ride so I don't get the nice light grey seats dirty!!!

Ah! I have a seat cover for that bit! ;)

My old Thule rack from my a4 avant fitted my new Octavia Estate.

I got 4 Thule roof mounted racks (575) for around

I bought the Thule rack and carriers. be careful with the Thule footpack 3003 which is supposed to be designed for the fabia!! The feet ate specific for front/rear/left/ right. Easy to sort out but even when you get it right they dont line up exactly with the horrible slots in the roof and you may chip the black paint in the trim. My advice is to fit the bars loosely to the rack and only fully tighten the bars to the feet AFTER tightening the feet to the roof fittings. This will give the best fit to take on and off easily.

If you only want to fit the rack at weekends like I doo it won't be long until the little black plastic covers are useless and fall into the trim. I have a quick fix if it happens.

What sort of hit does the MPG take with this fitted, plus bikes Dave?

Strangely, it is about the same usually, if not better(?) as I drive more slowly and don't overtake everyone slower than me. TBH, on the way back home I generally drive like a granny with the windows down - a great way to relax after a ride.

On the motorways, if I do 70mph, the mpg drops by 5-7. If I do over that, it really starts dropping off (not the bike though, thankfully!). But I don't like driving fast with my pride and joy strapped to the roof... sad I know. :D

Question for you now steve... what does sally cinamon mean/refer to???

I knew someone would ask eventually... :)

I was this morning!! Bloody rain! :(

All fitted!!! :D

Dead easy to fit, and I'm impressed with the Thule carriers!

Pics will follow (if it stops raining!).

Nice one

So which Thule carriers did you get again? (Didnt follow the thread  ) Im only asking because my heavy-ish bike rocks about quite a bit over bumps and uneven surfaces and I might change to a sturdier rack. How heavy is your bike?
