Roof mounted bike racks

Nice one

So which Thule carriers did you get again? (Didnt follow the thread  ) Im only asking because my heavy-ish bike rocks about quite a bit over bumps and uneven surfaces and I might change to a sturdier rack. How heavy is your bike?

I got the 591 ProRide.

Just tried both bikes on the racks & had to space them outwards as far as possible. Both handlebars were clashing with each other.

Another thing I noticed is the channels that the tyres sit in aren't that wide. If you run anything bigger than a 2.1" tyre (especially a tyre with aggressive side knobblies), then you might be struggling. Luckily my front is a 2.0" & rear is 1.9".

Tried to rock the bikes back & forth but they seem to be pretty solid on the racks.

I'll give it a better test 2moro.

Pics will have to wait 'til 2moro as the light is fading fast!!!

It the withstood the test I gave it this morning!! :)

Good stuff... that's the rack I've got. Nice and simple... I thought I'd not go for a ride today and wait for better weather tomorrow, but I think it's going to be worse! Will just have to get wet... :o

BTW, I have 2.25 panaracer cinders on my bike and it fits into the channels fine... the blocks are a bit tight on the edge but as long as you strap the wheels down well it doesn't matter...

sorry to invade and 're-ignite' an old thread, but I was wondering what kind of load the skoda/thule bars can take. I have to do a bit of IKEA shopping, and the load (flat-pack shelves) would be about 55kg. It that bearable on these bars?

You'll need to check in the manual as to how much the roof can handle, rather than the actual roof-rack.

55kg is pretty heavy, might be to much for the roof to handle.

I think the maximum roof load is 75 Kg. How you get something that heavy up there is a different matter ...

ok, i will hae a read of the manual to see.. it is 2001 Fabia Classic.. Hatchback..

I don't think I'd risk it if I were you. The last thing you want to do is end up with dents in the root.

I can confirm that the max load is 75kg.

Sorry to jump on this thread but I have a set of the official Skoda roofbars for a Fabia (made by Thule) that I no longer require and are for sale.

PM me if interested, I will also put them in the for sale section.

Thank

I have the Skoda roof bars and Thule bike rack. These seem to offer the best combination of quality/value.

The plastic roof rail caps are a real pain, and even my local Skoda dealer agrees they are a design fault. I think the assumption is that once the roof bars are fitted you leave them on. But if like me you do not want the added wind noise and reduced fuel economy created by the bars when not being used you need to re-use the plastic caps when you remove them - except that this is virtually impossible without breaking them due to the crazy design and rigid plastic used. So you either have to buy replacements each time you break one, or go without and leave the holes exposed which looks a mess.icon8.gif

Stew, what is the fix you refer to for these?

I can't get the caps back in either, ended up braking one then giving up. :thumbdwn:

The rack will take a max of 75Kg

I found the plastic caps easier to slot back in if your remove the 2 small lugs near the pointy end
