16" wheels on a MKIII VRS..........

Featured Replies

Does anyone know if my 16" winter wheels off my ex MkII FL Vrs will fit on my new MkIII Vrs, the front brakes look awfully BIG

Think the MkIII brakes are bigger than the MkII Vrs

Don't believe they will :)

17" is the minimum that will fit on the front.

Yeah it seems a strange choice considering the similar power-rated Golf doesn't have them but the larger front brakes on the vRS mean only 17" are officially supported.

I didn't really consider it when I bought it but its a bit of a pain as the 17"/18" winter tyres of the correct size are much more expensive that the equivalent 16".

As there is little difference between 17" and 18" winter prices I'm considering just swapping the rubber on my Gemini's for the winter.

This way the wheels are also balanced twice a year & it saves shelling out on a new set of alloys.

Maybe you could try fitting one of the 16" before you stick them up for sale though just to try it.

They won't fit.
I have 17 inch wheels and brake calliper is extremely close to the rim (in front).
But you can try if you want...

This isn't good news i was tempted to have a look at mk3 octavias as one of the plus points is i would already have a set of winter wheels and almost new tyres.

Will they fit on lesser models suh as the 150hp diesel models?

The vrs brakes are those from the golf gti performance pack.  Does the vrs need them? No more nor less than any feature it has I guess, although it is nice to know stopping quickly and controlled is easy.   It does mean you need 17" rims though, with a knock on to tyre price.

Yes you can fit 16" wheels on the other models just not VRS as they have bigger front discs.

How big are the front discs compared to the MkII Vrs?

312mm versus 340 I think.

Although discs are slightly bigger on Mk 3 vs Mk 2, it is the size of the calliper on the Mk 3 VRS that is considerably larger - with 17" alloys fitted in winter there is only a few millimetres clearance.

Post #67 shows clearance on 17s. When you consider balance weights on wheels 3mm clearance only - obviously different wheels / offsets may afford greater more room.
