Felicia MPI starting problem

Featured Replies

Hi hope someone can help.

My 98 1.3 MPI has a starting problem.

First from cold starts first turn of key, runs on choke until warm about 1100rpm tick over and drops back to 800rpm.  Runs fine when driving.

When hot if turn off, then within 5 to 10 mins start will start fine, but if try to start after 10 mins then will turn over first turn of key, second turn of key will start but ticks over at about 400 rpm, put foot down on accelerator and let go ticks over normally at 800rpm.

Then same happens as above, within 5 to 10 mins .....

Things I have done replaced

new coil pack

checked valve clearance

cleaned injectors

checked fuel rail pressure (ok)

cleaned Map/air flow sensor in inlet manifold

cleaned Throttle body

TB alignment using vag com

New temp sensor thermostat housing

second hand ecu

checked fuel pressure regulator on fuel rail

cleaned all sensor connectors

Any ideas welcome

Have you changed the coolant sensor or just the housing?

New coolant sensor

you mentioned an entire list of things you tried.

I wonder based on what evidence you decided to do that?

because afaik you don't throw parts at your car unless you diagnosed the problem and found real evidence.

in the case of Felicia MPI, any real diagnosis is made using a VAG-COM scanner when the problem is known to occur.

and I'm not talking about looking for error codes because OBD I is quite primitive and throws very few codes.

I am talking about monitoring various parameters and decide what looks bad.

such as: temperature, pressure, fuel trims, oxygen, etc.

If I had vag-com scanner I would of used it, but I don't so I've been using good old logic and elimination.

Also research such as looking on forums such as this to see if others have had smiler problems and what did they do that fixed the problem.

And yes I have solved problems many times with various cars "throwing parts at your car".
