Megs products. Never again!

Featured Replies

I bought these from Halfords as it was 3 for 2 offer. Third was Megs tyre gel.

Was dying to use these so washed and prep car for them. Applied the polish on half the roof and waited a few minutes.

The instructions said easy on buff straight off.

Anyway tried to buff off and it was bonded on and wouldn't budge. Like this photo

I tried the front wing as it's a small area(Citigo) left for 5 mins. Still the same won't come off :(

I've tried other areas ranging in waiting times from 1 minute to 20 minutes. There products are utter sh!te and I won't use them again. I haven't even opened the wax as I daren't try it. I had to take the car to work and pressure wash that rubbish off.

Came back to use good old Autoglym. Can't beat it :)

So if anyone wants those nightmare polish and wax you're welcome to them. The tyre gel was ok though.

Don't understand...if it said buff off immediately...why did you wait?

I tried all times from straight away right up to 20 mins. It's like glue wouldn't come off. I applied with Megs applicator and used brand new microfibres. The AG SRP came straight off like it's supposed to do. I'm staying with there products as I've used them for years. I just thought I would try something different as people say how great Megs stuff is.

From the pictures it look like you tried to apply it in direct sunlight, this can have an adverse effect on some products like the ones you describe (i.e. baked on like steel if left too long)

I would only buy Megs detailers or pro range. Not keen on their off the shelf products, however this does just seem like a case of baking on.

Polish needs to be worked in, you should have kept working it in until it Was almost clear.

Glad you got it off.

I done this late afternoon. I took the car out the garage and that photo was in the shade 100%. No panels were hot and temp was about 18 degrees. I did work it in quite well and was using it sparingly even though the photo of it looks different. It even clogged the microfibre very quick. Anyway there was no winning with this. I would've thought being Megs the products would be similar to each other but I guess not.Trial and error here. I'm very happy with Autoglym though.

Did you miss out on step 1? the paint cleaner it is designed as a 3 stage process.

Car was stripped of all polish/wax beforehand with TFR from work via powerwash and hand wash the same.

Megs consumer stuff is dead easy to use, so something isnt right.

When stuff wont come off easy its either the panel was too hot, you used too much or didnt take it off at the right time. This stuff is used by literally hundreds of thousands of people around the world every week. Its huge in the US and probably the biggest selling range of car products in the country.

So, the most likely issue is that you either used too much or worked too big an area and it dried. Something like the Step 2 polish is a deep cleaner/abrasive to improve the surface so it needs a small amount of product, ideally on a foam or MF pad, slightly damp, and worked in a small area like 30cm x30cm. Work it a bit and then remove with a clean MF immediately. Move to the next patch and do not allow anything to cake on or dry.

The wax is good, although not very long lasting. Havent used it for a while but its essentially a new version of the classic Megs #26, so needs a very thin wipe over so you almost cant see it on the panel (if you can see a smear of wax then you put it on much too thin, and IIRC you leave it to haze for a couple of mins. The usual test is that you will see it start to haze on the panel and when you can lightly swipe a clean finger through the haze and it removes the wax leaving a shiny swipe mark, then its time to buff off. Doesnt take long when its warm. Should then buff off quickly and easily but use a clean MF and turn it frequently and use a couple of cloths to do the car. A light spritz of QD or water will help on any patches where it might have gone on a little thick.

Good luck.

Read past my first post.

I've tried it always to no avail.

Need to find a decent wax now to go over the SRP.

if you like AG stuff and want something easy to find, then AG HD wax is superb and easy to use. Otherwise your choice is almost limitless.

I'd suggest the first question is what type of application do you want/prefer? Liquid, spray, hard or soft wax? Then choose based on your preferences. If you want very hard wearing and long lasting then Collinite products or FK1000p are great and people are raving about Fusso wax, although it does seem to have a few quibbles with the way its applied for some people. Otherwise the world is your oyster depending on price range....

Great advice thanks :)

I have been working with AG for years and I'm always impressed so far.

I have an 80% full pot of AG HD wax if you want to swap it for something? I don't use it anymore.

All my stuff is AG except that Megs products in the photo I bought recently. The wax still has the seal on and I've only used a couple of squirts out the polish.

Don't use this one experience to base your opinion on Megs products for most are fantastic, and let's be honest Megs have lead the way for a long time before the more trendy boutique brands appeared.

If you want to sample anything in particular give me a shout I will send you some products to try out.

Had the same issue with their ultimate polish, route cause? Panels to warm!

I tried doing a panel at a time, very hard to get off. So I worked in smaller sections and buffed off instantly. Worked fine, with good results. I didn't think it was warm, black car sat in shade that had just been washed, but obviously was.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've been using this stuff recently too. My initial thoughts were the same, utter crap and a bloody pig buff off! I think I'll save it now till it gets a bit cooler.

Must admit when i started out - i used a lot of Megs stuff; but these days.... hardly use it all.

Haven't ever tried the OP products right enough - but sounds like they are best avoided.

Meguiars are a decent company and produce a good range of products...easily obtainable too

Like all first applications ....read the instructions and make sure the panel temperatures are not too high

Each to there own - as i said, in my experience.... i started as a big Megs fan.... APC, shampoo, metal polish, etc.

No question they are a decent company - but seems that many are catching up and very competitively priced.

I never found them poor performers, but i have now progressed to many better products/suppliers.... IMO.

Buy what works and what your budget affords. Nothing set in stone with detailing products.

It seems a bit unfair to criticise the Megs range based on the experience of one user who doesn't appear to have followed the instructions for use!!

I guess we all have our favourites, I bought some Poorboys Black Hole based on the positive reviews, but I can't get on with it and cannot detect any difference in the finish when I have used it, either,

I've used the 3 step Megs stuff & found it to good, echo the comments about the step 2 polish though small area at a time & its fine, the step 3 wax is really easy to use but not the longest lasting.

Glad its not just me then i was very underwhelmed by black hole again after reading all the positives i expected a noticeable difference but didn't seem any better to me at all.
