Battery draining, car not starting

Featured Replies

I had this on a 21 month old car.  Local Skoda dealer had it for a week, then two more weeks. Yes, the battery wasn't of the best, but it appeared that one or more modules were not shutting down properly when stopping the engine/locking the car.  I'm lucky enough to possess a current clamp meter and sometimes got 6 amp discharge with everything off.  I never got a really straight answer from the dealership but it came back fixed and with a new and better battery under warranty.  'Something to do with the distributed earthing arrangements' was all I got, which didn't ring true.

Anyway, despite being provided with a courtesy car, Skoda UK rang to apologise for my troubles and gave me a free service voucher - and as the next one is a big one at 38k miles, quite a nice bit of compensation.

And no more problems

And if you remove fuse F8 I believe i I remember correctly the problem goes away. Mind you so does the ability to have any thing of you centre consul working, like the Columbus unit.

If anyone is in the market for a new battery, then this 77Ah / 760 CCA Exide one looks reasonable (4yr guarantee): http://www.carparts4less.co.uk/cp4l/c/Skoda_Superb_2.0_2012/p/car-parts/car-electrics-and-car-lighting/electrical/car-battery/?444770966&1&337f1a45b763cfefa4a2de12a711aff0dd11bd59&000020

It's £75.49, but then if you spend over £75 you can get £10 off = £65.49 delivered.

Edit: be aware that this is for a taller 096 battery (190mm tall) vs the 100 model battery that you most likely have in your car (175mm tall).

If it makes anyone feel better my 70Ah Banner battery has just died following the recent cold snap.

I used to do 50+ miles to work and back each day, but am between jobs at the moment so only shortish journeys over the past fortnight.  Bit disappointed it didn't last longer, as it is just 3 years old.  Replacing it with a Bosch S5 096 77Ah which is the same dimensions as the Banner.

I'm gonna stick my Banner on charge over the weekend now that you've said that!

For the third time in a year the car would not turn over. As before the drain on the battery has returned. Clearly identified by the recovery guy (his name is Chris and he was very distinct in his approach) who is sending his report to state that the sat nav should be replaced. Hopefully it will now happen.

Therefore had to drive the wife's Yaris, so no telly at lunch time.  :D

I've had to call out the AA (via Skoda Assistance) three times myself in the last six months as my 2013 Superb 170 DSG had a flat battery and had failed to start.  My local dealer had the car for 3 days in May and found nothing wrong!  There is obviously a problem. I've bought an AA solar powered trickle charger, but despite using this, when I remember, it is still slow to turn over.

In 38 years of Volvo ownership, I never had to call on breakdown  assistance.  Admittedly, I'm doing short journeys at the moment with the odd 60 mile round trip. I'm not using the car any differently to my two previous Volvo diesels however, an S80 and a V70 and they gave no problems. Swedish vehicles are tough and have to be capable of starting in an arctic winter.

I will be taking the car back to my dealer shortly and demand they get to the root of the problem.

Mine eventually repeated a flat battery problem at the dealers after being fully charge (over the weekend) having previously shown it was ok! In the end after quite a few days at the dealers who were struggling to get Skoda UK to acknowledge it despite it being a known problem for the recovery boys they seem to find a software update that shut down the Columbus systems and their attachment correctly instead of having whatever not shutting down and therefore continuing to draw several amps for twenty img minutes plus a new battery.

I must say a lot of the perseverance is down to the dealer who would not give up despite not getting a great deal of help from Skoda UK.

Good idea!

I've actually kept the Banner in case I get similar symptoms (dashboard lights, clicking etc) with the Bosch, as that would very likely mean it's not a battery fault.

The car refused to start for the fourth time on Saturday and I called Skoda Assistance.  This time, instead of the AA, Volkswagen Technical turned up and the technician replaced my battery which was dead! The car is used every day for short trips but does get the odd 60 mile round trip. After fitting the battery, the technician waited for the car systems to close down before measuring the residual drain on the battery which was 0.1 amps, i.e. lower than average he said.  Hopefully the car will be reliable now but I'm still not sure about the Columbus unit which turns itself off a minute after switching it on.
