Has anyone bought/sold a mk1 VRS recently?

Featured Replies

Recently meaning in the last few months. I'm pushing to get a fair valuation for my car that has been written off after a white van man crashed into the back of me and need evidence to support my dispute. Mine is a silver mk1 hatch on an 02 plate with 120k. Standard cars close to my car's age and mileage would be more helpful (so 51, 02 and 52 plate with over 100k).

If you are able to help by PMing me the following info it would be much appreciated:

Type of sale (dealer/private)

Price

Age and mileage

Colour

Hatch/estate

Cambelt not overdue

Working air con?

Optional extras? Cruise, sunroof etc?

Any significant bodywork damage?

Number of services

Any help much appreciated!

what have they offered you?

As I think i've put on other threads before, did a lot of looking when I got mine in January.

Prices generally seem pretty consistent and not very age dependent. Excellent condition, sub 70k mileage and FSH is around £3k. Reasonable condition and sub £100k miles £2k - £2.5k. Pretty much anything on 100k+ or in not fantastic condition tends to hover around the £1,500 mark but have seen a number for less than a grand. Estate generally nets about a £500 premium.

What was your offer? Bare in mind that at this point options aren't going to make a huge difference to the price unless car is being broken rather than sold.... Cambelt status and hatch/estate more influential.

Even if the replies state the location of the sales, the prices won't mean much for your purposes. A sale price in West Suffolk will be different from other parts of the UK. You need to find similar cars sold locally.

'Book price' is probably 800 or less I bet.

Why is the estate modal less valuable?

No more.....

kiscix states £500 premium uplift basically.

No offence but the early vrs like yours 2001/2002 wont fetch much more than £1500/1700 tbh. You see plenty for sale at prices much more than that but they will be lucky to sell.

Not enough to replace it with a car with similar spec, condition and history. Don't need to post it on here as I'm not looking for pre-accident valuations from people who don't know/haven't seen the car.

This is true - cars in the south/south east are generally a bit more than those in the far flung corners of the country.

A 2002 '02' one with 95k recently sold on eBay for £1820 with EML on, budget tyres, overdue cambelt and no cruise control.

Quite possibly, but that doesn't make all 95k 02 plates with an EML and budget tyres worth £1,820. I would say a very lucky seller there tbh.

Whilst I see your reasons for this, we are a community - perhaps what you've been offered along with some pre crash pics for condition would be helpful as would enable some good comparisons that might get you a fairer settlement - otherwise all we have to go on is the car's age and mileage, which will probably push the value down.

...A 2002 '02' one with 95k recently sold on eBay for £1820 with EML on, budget tyres, overdue cambelt and no cruise control...

That's about the right price for £95k miles, EML and cambelt due.

What really sets the price is the mileage. Most buyers seem to think they are good to about 140k miles, so at 95k that's 45k left - at 120k that only 20k.

I looked over one for a friend in Bedford. 118k, silver, absolutely perfect inside (non-smoker) and out, 8 months tax/MOT, no problems mechanically, good tyres, just regassed and serviced. Only problem was a bulb out. Bought for £1550.

When I was in the trade I used to advise people to look on Autotrader but only at trade sales, on the grounds that there is (allegedly) some degree of legitimacy about them compared to private sales. Aslo has the advantage of making you loook at higher prices by default, which does your arguement no harm at all.

Basically you need to prove that, in order to replace your car with something as near as possible, you'd have to buy from a dealer and therefore pay the price they ask (or very close to it).

My only caveat to this is that these cars are now quite old and unlikely to be on offer at main dealers or the more reputable independents, meaning you will find a load of them offered by part-time dealers (ie those who would prefer it if the tax man didn't know) who work on small margins due to no overheaeds (like forecourts) and whose prices only just outstrip private sales.

Good luck with it - hope it ends well.

An 03 2003 with 110k with history and mot/tax sold on ebay for 400 quid, cant comment on its tyres though.

Im not trying to put you or your car down but the VRS is now in banger money terrority.

If it was me and they offered me over a grand I'd probably take it

Type of sale (dealer/private) PRIVATE

Price £500

Age and mileage 2003/170,000

Colour SILVER

Hatch/estate HATCH

Cambelt not overdue DIDN'T MATTER

Working air con? DIDN'T MATTER (but was working)

Optional extras? Cruise, sunroof etc? REMAPPED ECU

Any significant bodywork damage? WAS PRETTY TIDY

Number of services DIDN'T MATTER

Pretty much sums up the last one. :)

I bought a 52 plate black VRS, 115k miles on the clock, immaculate condition, all standard and 2 owners. Bought with 8 months MOT and 6 months tax and bought this from a car dealership selling second hand cheap cars under £2k.

I paid £1200 with a full tank of fuel.

I done cambelt myself to save cash and for piece of mind.

IF it helps...have just bought a 2003 OCTAVIA estate VRS with a few problems, needs a CV joint, also new radio aerial plus a few minor bits of trim. In very good condition otherwise with a FSH, and to me the most important thing....only two owners from new. Huge history file and a MOT until next May. No tax. £1600.  very pleased with the car so far, only downside is that I live in Cornwall and the car was in Essex so another £300 to get it down here....

oh, the mileage? 134K

How bad is the damage?

Can it be repaired.

I hope you haven't let them take it away to an approved repair centre as they may well have already had it taken away.

You can take the car to a repair centre of your choice.

Someone either got a bargain or a money pit then. Not much help to me though.

I very much doubt you would accept their valuation if you were in my shoes. You don't have enough information to make a valuation on my car and that was not the purpose of this thread.

That sounds like a good deal, if one like that came up near me I'd just snap it up, accept the offer and move on. Chances of that seem unlikely though!

To repair with new parts is more than the value of the car, but after I've bought it back I might consider sourcing some second hand parts myself and having it repaired. Car is on my driveway so won't be going anywhere without my say so :)

I had initially ruled out the idea of getting it repaired because it will be registered as a write off and once I'm paid out the car will be off the road while I source parts and have it repaired. After struggling to find a good mk1 replacement I'm starting to come back round to the idea though...

....that was not the purpose of this thread.

My mistake.

I assumed that was exactly the purpose of this thread.

I thought your insurance company has valued your car.

I thought that you have valued your car.

I thought those two figures had some serious distance between them.

I thought you then started this thread to work out what other cars like yours are worth so that you can apply that to your car to prove that your valuation of your car is more accurate than their valuation of your car.

I guess I must have misunderstood.

Yes, you did. The purpose of this thread was to get details of recent sales which I can use to compare to my car and what it has been valued at. That is different to asking "what's this car worth?", I can use price guides and look on eBay/Autotrader for that.

Some bloke on a forum who doesn't know my car but says it's worth £XXXX is not classed as evidence and does not help me.

I dont think your going to get much help on here with the sort of attitude you have.

You havent told us how much value the insurance have put on your car, maybe its none of our business but i get the feeling your putting an unrealistic price on your car.

I cant see a problem with his attitude the problem is that no one has given the OP an answer to his question only rough values of what they think it could be worth,

It makes no difference in this case what the insurance have offered or what the OP values it at.

He is asking what price people have paid for a car recently or what they have sold them for.

Not an unreasonable request as members could PM him if they don't want to say on the forum.

I cant help as I haven't bought or sold a VRs.

This is me gracefully bowing out of this thread

Good luck with things and I hope you find what you need to get what you want out of your insurers
