Child Seat Advice - Airbags

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Have purchased this car seat (Bebehut BAB001) from Amazon only to discover it comes with a warning

DO NOT USE THIS CHILD SEAT IN PASSENGER SEATS EQUIPPED WITH AIR BAGS

I planned to put this in the rear (onside) passenger seat of our Yeti which has rear passenger air bags

Do all Child seats come with this advice? What are we supposed to fit instead!

Should I send it back? Would you put it in anyway...

Confused, please help!

Many thanks

Side airbags are fine, it's the airbags that deploy directly into the seat, IE forward facing ones that the warning is for.

Side and curtain airbags deploy parallel to the seat, not towards it.

And you will find all e marked child seats will have that warning.

However, I personally wouldn't have a seat without ISOFIX mountings, since they are far more secure and stable.

Used carefully, seatbelt mountings can be as secure as Isofix - but Isofix minimises the risk of incorrect / sloppy /loose fitting.

When we had Group 0 seats, we had a Maxi Cosi base in each car. One was the Isofix version, the other was the seatbelt version.

I could get the seatbelt version much more rigidly fitted than the isofix (albeit it took some strength and effort to get it in tight); the Isofix version always had some sideways movement.

However, I currently have Britax Evolva Gp 1/2/3 seats in the Yeti, which are seatbelt-fixed and it's almost impossible to get the seatbelt to stay tight and hold them firmly in place - it gradually slackens over a few days, as there is nothing to lock it in place. Bit of a crap design. The slippery leather seats in the Yeti don't help either.

So I'm considering replacing them with some Isofix high-backed Gp 2/3 boosters - not cheap though.

It's a bit of a minefield!

I'd be a bit wary of only paying £23 for a child's seat though - would feel happier spending the money on a model from a more well known brand that's probably undergone more safety testing.

I wonder if techs can disable an individual airbag for a semi-permanent seat position and reactivate later.

As we have a new grandson we ordered the Yeti with ALL available airbags.

We purchased two Maxi Cosi (seat belt fix) seats on offer at £90 each from Halfords.

They have a belt tensioner built into them so when not in use they can be left slack to minimis digging into the gripper/seat.

We also fitted a full seat gripper cover plus an additional gripper on the seat pad to stop marking the leather. The seat + baby can be very heavy.

The seat has rear rails which I  covered with silcone tubing to prevent damage.

My son has the same set-up in his car...hence why we purchased two.

All seems good.

Even though that cheap seat appears to have the correct spec I would not have bought it.

Might try some of those gripper things in the back of mine....

Good that those Maxi Cosi seats have a belt tensioner (just like the bases did that I mentioned) - means you can get them nice and firmly fitted and they won't loosen off like mine do!

I have a Britax Evolva 1,2,3 fitted in my Yeti for our grandson, I also have a seat protector mat similar to Don that came from Amazon, never had any problem with belt slackening off. I agree with other posters I wouldn't buy that seat in the OP.

Problem I find with the Evolva is that is just relies on friction to stop the belt from slackening off, where it loops around the rear of the seat and against itself. There is no method of locking it.

Note that I'm still using the inbuilt harness for the kids - haven't reconfigured it for the upper age/weight usage yet.

I kneel onto the Evolva, with my weight I push it down/back as hard as I can into the car, then tug the seat belt as tight as I can to get it firmly fitted.

But then after a few days, it slackens off and if I get hold of the top of the seat, there is some sideways and front to back movement. It needs to stay rigidly fixed.

I contacted Britax about it, and they confirmed there is no way of locking, and I had to keep tightening it up.

Other seats have a clamp, ratchet or similar arrangement that can lock the belt tight, so it can't slacken off, which to me is a far safer arrangement.

That way, you're not relying on the action of the inertia reel mechanism of the car to kick in first - which in an impact, will allow the whole kids seat to travel forwards by some distance first before it locks.

(I don't think they fit pre-tensioners to the rear belts, like the front ones have ?)

So I'm going to get rid of the Evolvas, even though it's going to cost a fair bit to replace them.
