Is it the turbo?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Looking for a bit of advice on a sudden issue from my journey to work today. I've got a 08 plate 1.9TDi which has just gone over 110,000mi.

So the isssue is that the car seems to be running OK. It revs OK in neutral, but when I'm driving along and put my foot down, I suddenly have no turbo and I can hear what I would describe as a shhhing noise, which sounds a bit like compressed air leaking or strong wind rushing past. It's completley connected to the accelerator and in the range at about 2000rpm when there turbo kicks in. I haven't noted any other issues like smoke from the exhaust but my cruise control has symultaneously stopped working today so I'm wondering if this is more of an engine managment issue.

It sounds like you have a boost leak to me.

You would need to check all the turbo hoses for any signs of a leak (look for oil on them). Give the connectors a little wiggle and make sure they are firmly connected.

second that, classic boost leak symptoms, i think the one at the bottom that joins to the intercooler is quite common for coming loose / off, all of the 1.9 TDI's i have owned have wept oil at this joint as the seal has come loose.
