XR2i v Fiesta ST last night.

I was initially very unimpressed with their standard of driving, weaving in and out of the traffic, undertaking, swerving back and forth and exceeding the speed limit, especially the 14 plate ST wannabe racing driver.

The mint F reg mk2 Fiesta XR2i pulled up alongside him at the traffic lights whilst I was in the third lane waiting to turn right, changed to green, and don't know what was under the bonnet of the XR, but bloody hells teeth, it left the ST for dead!  :D

The ST takes 6.5 seconds to get to 60mph on a good day, driven by a decent driver.

They are not actually that quick, their strength is the handling.

The XR2 sounds like fun though. :D

XR2 would only need 130hp or so to have the same bhp/T as the ST. RS-Turbo engine would do it.

A mildly fettled RS engine would probably let it trash the ST in a straight line.

XR2i - 120hp/T

RS-T 1.8 - 146hp/T

ST - 145hp/T

Quick search shows a few RS turbos running 200hp = 220hp/T.

It's all about weight. Cars these days are lardy buggers with all the safety gear and extras.

I do not condone such antics on the public highway, but I could sense the Grand Prix start in the making as they both sat there side by side, blipping the throttle.

I wasn't disappointed.

That XR2i shot off like an exocet missile! :o

XR2I is a seriously impressive machine! I've ridden shotgun in one and it shocked me for a 30 odd year old car! Rapid :)

Not as impressive as the pounding throbbing 957cc lump that resides under the bonnet of my mk1 though, surely?  :D

0-60?

You must be kiddin'.

It'll be on show at the Vauxhall Motor plant in Ellesmere Port on Sunday... (BIG BERTHA permitting  )... btw if anyones passing.

I'll be in the doughnut section...eating not performing. :D

I still reckon my 1200 would slay the XR2I with it's malfunctioning 54bhp

Vauxhall? Watch it doesn't start to act like a vauxhall or it will be a recovery truck home

This wasn't in Bromborough was it?

White ST and a red xr?

Yup.

You see' em too?  :o

About 9pm by the Bromborough retail park traffic lights...one of the few around here that actually DO control traffic?  :notme:

Please don't tell me you were driving one of them?   :D

XR driver I'll forgive (just) , but the ST driver was a tool swerving in and out of the traffic.

I thought we'd agreed a couple of weeks ago that the Combo van was a SWEET thing generally speaking? :sun:

Ohh yes I loved the combo I'm just making a vauxhalls of old joke ;) looked at a combo crew on a 61 plate this evening but miles too high for me

1.7 or 3?

1.7 is an Isuzu engine, and should have continued, and would have done if it hadn't been for Euro regs apparently.

Bullet proof, and wouldn't let it worry me if it's got history and the mileage is reflected in the asking price.

I still miss mine tbh..

Yes quite right it's a 1.7 CDTI which was a continuation of the 1.7DI that started on the old shape Combo in 1995 and then got turbod and common rail! It had done 235,000 miles was showing wear all of interior tidy on the outside! It is bullet proof but I'm not sure it's for me at £2500 I've loved my past 2 combos :)

80k p.a is quite some mileage.

Maybe it's just me... or maybe it's nostalgia.

IIRC the original XR3 (not the later and, in theory,  much improved XR3i) had 98bhp.  It drove like an absolute rocket, so much fun, so much power, unbelievable - everyone who could afford one had one!  (Never mind that a basic astra 1.6 carburretor could beat it purely 'cos the Astra could do 90 in 3rd where the Ford had to go to 4th at about 70).

Anyway... I reckon you could laldy it these days with a modern van.  Ok I'll re-phrase... a modern van with a non-basic engine, something like a Sprinter 313, or a Transit Tourneo.

(in case it's a jock thing...laldy (pronounced lall-dey) sort-of means "beat it", or "show it a thing or two", or "embarrass it", or "WTF was that, I didn't expect that?" if you get my drift.

I remember a 'friend' of mine who bought the Escort XR3 when it first came out. ('81 iirc?)

I was so envious, especially as he was well know in my circle of friends as being a complete and utter tool and totally clueless as to how to actually drive.

Totally wasted on him.

I vaguely remember it going like 'hot snot', but by comparison to todays offerings, very slow.

Honestly, I wish I had a recorder in the car.

My car was restricted to 45mph last night, through the Ford Mykey (Don't ask!). I've figured it out now though!

I do remember passing 2 slower cars (A white Ibiza and Black 207) on the inside but they had been in the outside lane from the M53 roundabout going less than 40mph and like most people do, they stay in the right hand lane for 5 miles if they are going right into the Croft park. I certainly did not undertake or weave through the traffic.

I also remember seeing a silver facelift Superb, looks very nice by the way.

The xr2i pulled up next to me at the light's but neither of us were revving, it did sound like he was running a good set of carbs and some solid engine mounts as the car was rocking while idling at the lights. He took off first and I followed, not even half throttle and neither of us went over 45mph. Partly due to a police station round the corner and a speed camera at the next lights, now I'm a bit older I would never race on the roads and I like having a clean license. Plus the fact in the 3000 miles I have done in the car I had struggled to better a tank average of 32mpg, this tank I have achieved 44 odd due to a more relaxed driving style. I'll admit, the car does provoke you to drive it hard, honestly, it's the car not me Gov! but the past 350 miles have been relatively calm.

I really think the car does attract the wrong attention, as if people expect it to be driven like a tool. It's one of the reasons it's up for sale. I much prefer cars that blend into the background.

If I did race him from the lights (and lost) I would have stayed quiet but I didn't. I did expect him to race away though and I bet he thought the same.

PM me if you think I'm wrong, or call in for a cuppa, you'll soon see I'm no racing driver wannabe

Ooops!  :D

Restricted to 45 my exceedingly............................. :notme:

Not reving, blipping, and you both took off like a pair of Jack Rabbits whilst I sat there at the red with my window down for the full effect.

YOU are a bad lad Mr Cav, and you did under and overtake....I WAS WATCHING FROM BEHIND!

It is frustrating though, sheeple hogging the outer lane, and I'd be an absolute liar if I stated I'd never done it myself in frustration, especially when they're doing 30 in a 40 limit for miles on end.

Do you know this geezer in the XR2i btw, 'cus I've never seen it before.

Downright bloody tasty looking . :p

(wasn't suggesting you were actually racing btw, as the XR only appeared just before the lights...just looked like a bit of a GP start at the lights and was actually most interesting wondering what was going to happen, as I could just sense it was)
