Alternator HELP

Featured Replies

Hello all.

I've got a 1.9TDI.

The last two days i've noticed a squeeking sound coming from the belt on the alternator. It generally goes away after i've driven  but will come back when i start it again the next morning.

Today was no different however i've just gone out to drive my car and noticed a whirling/howling/wind blowing through gap sound. This appears to be coming from the alternator again. This time I can smell burning smell coming from my alternator.

There does not seem to be any charging issues. Car starts fine. No battery light and no other lights.

Any ideas what this could be. I had the cambelt changed about a year and a half ago . Car has done 130k now.

Any ideas much appreciated.

Thank you

Alternator pulley has failed.

Cool cheers for the quick reply. Just been out to check the car again and to behonest the noise seems to be coming from the actual engine now.

Is it easier to change the whole alternator or just thepulley. Can you pulley be done with alternator still in car and should i do the tensioner as well at the same time

Yep, alternator pulley, this can be done with the alternator insitu, albeit with the belt removed, by a competent technician with the correct toolage

Did mine just before I sold it

Cheers for the help guys.

Took my belt off and the pulley is really wobbly. I can get a second hand alternator for £27 of ebay. Which is cheaper than buying the tool and pulley. Just wondering does the are the pd100 alternator same as other TDI such as golf and polo and even fabia VRS

Thats proper fattys leg. I bought the tool off ebay and ive actually used it a couple of times.

As to your question, get the part number off your alternator and smash that into ebay and see if its a part used by other models.
