Mk1 Mini purchase traumas?

Featured Replies

Actually there were lots of Automatic Minis built and sold.

Before the introduction of Mini Metro which was the most common Motability Scheme cars around 1977,

Before 'Motability', Minis were what you got from the Government Scheme after the Blue Invalid Carriage was fazed out,

and many if not most were automatics. Many still went for the Original Mini even after the Metro was introduced in 1980.

My last Mini was a Mayfair 1000 cc Automatic, and i had it tuned & took it Auto Testing, the only thing was it really did need to be stopped before putting into reverse.. Because if not you did wreck the Auto Box, but it was one of the easiest of all autos to overhaul.

They are very good fun and not made of Chocolate.

If anyone bothers to look they will see that lots of Blue Rinse Ladies & Fat Lazy Blokes with no interest in cars bought the best Specced Minis with Automatic gearboxes and these

are some of the lowest mile and best condition ones around.

  • As many people have said Rust is the main factor for Mini's, parts and fairly cheap for them however and many of the body panels are still available, albeit even the heritage panels are getting fiddly

  • Does he mean it doesnt need any welding or it hasnt had any welding? id be very suspicious of a 20 year old mini that has never had any welding done to it,you never know though, but yes a through exami

  • Pretty sure my boss still has this looking for a home   http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/288711-for-sale-1989-mini-automatic-only-22000-miles/?hl=%2Bmini+%2Bautomatic#entry3438040

Now you see, this is what I'm having to endure ^^^^^ (NO disrespect btw). Conflicting reports, and it becomes frustrating.

You aren't the first pair to say  what's just been said in the last two posts.

Cubs friend had an auto, and said basically the same as george, and then yesterday, the ex BL mechanic I know told me to avoid at ALL costs, 'cus they're very troublesome, and about £3000 to repair if and when they go wrong.

I hate these 'toss a coin ' scenarios.

Meanwhile, no word from the Birmingham man.

Think it must be sold and he just can't be bothered telling us.

Or has something to hide!

Actually they were troublesome to BL Mechanics.

but then BL and BL Garages were a big problem.

You talk to Automatic Specialists about Automatics, not generally Mechanics,

because often Dealerships put the Autoboxes off to a Specialist, well in the end they do, after they mess them up.

The Metro Automatic Problem usually or commonly was that BL/Rover Dealerships put in the wrong engine-gearbox oil.

That was my thought before i sent him a separate and unconnected message from  my cubs message from Saturday, to which he did reply on Sunday, followed up by another ebay message from my cub requesting us to have the car professionally inspected....if you get my drift.  :D

He hasn't replied to either which I personally find very odd IF you are REALLY keen on selling something. Either tyhat or he's very busy doing something of obvious higher priority, died, or simply can't be arsed for a variety of possible reasons.

Most odd IMO, but no really that worried as there doesn't seem to be a shortage of choice out there.

Thanks for those links btw George.

that first one looks tasty. :p

Sounds like there's something he doesn't want a mechanic to see but that's only assuming you never know!

In a way, I hope that's the case, as I've never actually asked a vendor for a full professional check on a car before.

Obviously if you're selling it because your  hoping that some numpty is simply going to come along, kick the tyres and then purchase on what is described as being true and accurate, with a nice glossy finish, knowing full well in reality that it's a crock of crap that's about to expire, then you aren't going to want said inspection, and this will be the first question that'll be asked in a any future 2nd hand car purchases too.

Of course, on the other side of the coin, I suppose a vendor could be become worried that the possible purchaser is going to be expecting absolute 100% perfection, and therefore doesn't want the hassle?  :notme:

Your lad can have this for 5k!   :D

Keep your Peugeot to yourself Mikey...

I'm about to change cars and may do something stupid....

I had the loan of one of these for 3 months going back some

15 or so years and it was a right laugh. It was the 1.6.

I particularly remember the bloke on a motorcycle who pulled up alongside

me after a good 5 miles of twisties asking me what was under the bonnet

because he couldn't get past me. Not a straight line fast car but the handling was pukka.

(HUGE turning circle though lol) I remember doing about 115mph in 5th bouncing off the limiter

a few times. I also remember the strange sucky sound when you closed the sunroof on the move.

i probably would have committed murder to own one back in the mid eighties.

The most lustful car ever up to that point.

About to get slated by a lot of people but I'd have one over a Golf!

Think we should have a thoroughly deserved and separate and dedicated thread to the 205GTi tbh.

Peugeot most CERTAINLY got it right, in virtually every dept....and you look at that munter they make now trying to replicate it.

I could weep.

Of that era, the 205GTI WAS the undoubted King....IMO...and many others too.

Golf was good, but not as at that point in time

Have spoken to the boss today when asked if he still had it he said "yes it's in a garage appreciating"

He's heard from members of the Brum ini club that they sell for anything between £2500-5000 and given it's condition if it sold for £3000 it'll probably be a little bit of a steal.

He's off to his mothers tomorrow and will try to take some more pictures.

He has stated that underneath pictures may be a bit difficult (given he's approaching 60 himself) but he'll do what he can.

He did however confirm that his mother kept the car garaged at all times so no external rust and that there should be zero underneath rust as his mother never (ever) drove in the rain!

I'm going to ring a auto box specialist tomorrow, to get the full 'low down' on these boxes, and if they are as bad ...or good.....as one or two have suggested?

I did know a guy quite well that worked in the particular one I'm going to target in Deeside, but it's several years since I last spoke to him, so he may not be there anymore.

I'm currently keeping an open mind.....and Mr Mini Mayfair from Birmingham , STILL hasn't contacted either of us btw, which I'm increasingly finding most strange tbh
