  • As many people have said Rust is the main factor for Mini's, parts and fairly cheap for them however and many of the body panels are still available, albeit even the heritage panels are getting fiddly

  • Does he mean it doesnt need any welding or it hasnt had any welding? id be very suspicious of a 20 year old mini that has never had any welding done to it,you never know though, but yes a through exami

  • Pretty sure my boss still has this looking for a home   http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/288711-for-sale-1989-mini-automatic-only-22000-miles/?hl=%2Bmini+%2Bautomatic#entry3438040

Didn't for me on HERE, but found it via a pm I sent to him.

Way over budget anyway, even if he was re-considering.

Absolute gem though.

that one's cheap compared to some of the commercial Mini's though.

£10-15k is not unusual it seems.

I bought a brand new one in Teal Blue  back in '71 for <cough splutter> £460!

That included Purchase Tax too iirc!  :D

Just got back from seeing my 'old school' mechanic.

The only word he could say every time i spoke was "RUST, RUST, RUST', oh, and watch out for dodgy synchro and oil leaks, oh, and RUST"

He then showed me the Canadian project, now LHD too.

Making and fitting a steel lift off complete front end.

Fired up it's 300 Honda horses for me! :o

0-60 sub 4 seconds if you can get it to hold its power down, and wheel spin easily obtainable in 4th.

Should be complete by November.

Absolute MONSTER in sheeps clothing.

There's a small but ever present Mini enthusiast group here and one of those boys has a fibre glass fronted, 1.7 VTEC equipped rocket. The engine isn't much over standard but the thing chuffing shifts. Many of them are yoofs too so there has to be a degree of affordability in it for them all roads up

I could get classic car insurance for a mark 1 that wouldn't

cost me more than £200 a year... The only thing stopping me is

having no garage to keep it in.

But I'm over 40, very good postcode and full licence over 20 years

and about 17 years since my last claim.

Insurance is something that used to be a big expense when I was young

and living in Dagenham. Now my annual insurance bill is just a whisker over £600pa

and that's 3 separate full comp policies for the S3, the van(trade insurance) and the bike.

Almost makes the greying hair worth it...

There are some privileges to getting the grey! Sickening that the insurance albeit classic was £92 for me on that golf. Pay £140 to Peter James for unlimited mileage on the mk2.

This thing's had a turbo fitted to it too.

Mods are going to have to be made to the bonnet and grille.

Young cub found a restored Mini 'Monte Carlo'... (yes Skoda stole the name too)....locally for sale, but someone he knows knows the car and advised him to steer clear.

There's just SO many sheds out there to catch the unwary. Absolute minefield.

Narrowed things down to a very nice looking low mileage original  Mini 'Mayfair' down Birmingham way, but I suggested it was a long way to go to start crawling around underneath, and even then possibly missing something.

Does look extremely tidy and genuine on the face of it, so suggested he spend some of his money getting it professionally inspected if the vendor is agreeable ...(if he's not, then walk)...., and using anything minor'ish that's found to bargain the asking price down, and anything major to be used as a 'near miss' warning.

Very tiresome this  car searching malarky.

I used to enjoy it, but there seems to be, and you hear of, just SO SO many scamsters out there now trying to rip you off.

Very difficult to be able to totally trust a random  sheeple on his or her word now sadly.

Lying and exaggerating the truth is prevalent and seemingly acceptable part of life to many now.

Pickup practical classics and have a look at the classifieds! We bought our stag through one of them for the sum of £3500

Someone mentioned a 911?

Just in case you need pointers how to go about doing it up....

Back on topic, there's a place on Wales I think, who do 'em up. Slip a bmw bike twin cam head on. Not too difficult apparently.

That car is so properly cool!

I'm sure they featured that on top gear once. A James May feature perhaps???

Yes,yes, yes,  but would the insurance believe him if he said it was really just a Mini?  :notme:

Yes, yes, yes oh yes. One for every day of the week. Then a weekend special.

Now you see, I like that too as i can see the potential for that to be a real stunner with not too muuch work.

Unfortunately, my young cub is 22 going on 95, whereas I'm the exact opposite (nearly)  :D

He likes absolute 100% originality as i do too, but i can be more flexible sometimes.

I won't even bother showing that to him as i can hear the comments already. :dull:

The issue is I go on ebay and get distracted I've gone from Mini clubman to Clio tyre to mk2 Escort rally car, I am a massive fan of the 1275gt and the Clubman, I do like something that stands out a bit more from the normal Mini! Same engine as used in the Sprites and Midgets,

i don't actually think there's anywhere or anything that we haven't looked at now.

Just waiting for this geezer from Brum to get back to us with answers to our questions before we decide if to get it professionally inspected or not.

Who was selling that rather tasty Mini Pickup in here 6 months or so ago?  :notme:

Search facility isn't throwing owt up for me.  :wall:

That was me,only just seen this thread,as others have said rust/rot is the big issue, most other stuff can be sorted easily, for 5k he should get a nice standard one which he could update to the spec he wants. There is a few in this months "Mini world" mag for sale section.

Yup.

I did find your original thread eventually Mikey, and started drooling again.  :D

I have SO many happy memories of both my Mini van and pickup that I had in the late 60's early 70's.

Two of my all time favourites tbh.

How is the pick up?

Shown it anywhere this year?

Edited by Mr Ree

Ive been to a couple of local shows where it got a lot of attention inc people wanting their pictures took with it as they used to have one for their work. Had no issues with it at all,got a new headling to fit when i get chance & its due its mot in sept. Still runs & drives lovely.......all 34bhp of it...lol....55mph is fast enough for her.

Brand spanking and on better fuel then, the road test max speed was mid seventies, maybe lower for the van/pickup.

Feels a lot more of course.

A text has come flooding in from the owner of this Mini Mayfair he's got the 'hots' for, and he claims it's sound underneath with no welding.

I've got the cub to text him back to see if he minds us employing a professional to inspect it thoroughly.

What year is the Mayfair?
