you "need" to ditch the oem unit if you want a decent sound...

you say you want bass? how much bass if just a little go 6x9 if alot go sub... either way the stock unit will not be powerful enough.;)

Yep , the stock HU is only about 14w per channel which is never going to give you much bass.

Minimum spend is going to be about 100 quid on a reasonable HU , 50 quid on front speakers , then about 200 for a half decent sub , box and amp. Leave the factory rears in place but disconnect the tweeters and fade the rears down a bit

I know

sounds great, what will i do with the existing tweeters? am i not better buying the speakers with seperate tweeters?

Kenny,

Get yourself to your local and bigger halfords and have a play with all the head units they have on display (my local store in Colchester has loads on display & wired up) - see what you like. At the end of the day, audio quality will be fairly equal among the known brands. Extra features and displays are what's going to do it for you :)

Try changing the headunit and adding a sub and then see how that sounds - you might be surprised and find that you don't really need to rush and change the other speakers :) (And it saves you some money at the same time...)

STILL SEARCHN DONT NO IF I SHOULD GET ALL IN ONES OR SEPERATE TWEETERS

Kenny,

The best set up you can have is to ditch ALL the standard equipment and then go for component speakers at the front (Try Focal, Crystal Audio, Rockford Fosgate or Dragster (If you can find them!) and then get a decent sub 2 10"'s or a single 12" will be good and a decent amp.

I run a single soon to be dual JL Audio 12 W6 Dual sub with a good quality amp (Lanzar) and Crystal Mobile Audio front components.

If you can spend reasonable money on the components and try ebay for a good sub. Most of the people on e-bay are enthusiasts, so the gear is usually good and you'll save a packet!

Alternatively try www.talkaudio.co.uk where the best advice is available.

Hope this helps...

cheers, is it an octavia u have? cause ive been told the mounting depth is shallow and maybe the better speakers wont fit?

am i better with the speakers with seperate tweeters or does it not make much diff?

Yes I have a VRS and the speakers at the front needed a slight bit of modifying of the door webbing to get the magnets in but this is dead simple.

You can PM me and I will explain in more detail if you want to contact me directly.

I replaced the factory tweeters with the ones from the components and hot glued them in place. The front tweeter door casings do have to be modified but again this is child's play.

If you go back through the ICE section of the forum, you will see the pictures I posted showing various stages of the fit. I posted them round about end july early Aug, so have a peek and this will show you more.

Where are you based as I have mates who can fit the stuff at nominal cost and who are very highly experienced in all things ICE

i live in central scotland.

ive heard the mounting depth is 47.5mm but that seems very small. i dont really want to damage the car so alterations must be small and not visible

anyone no the size of the rear speakers?

Kenny,

Try skipping back a page or two.

cant see the dimensions for the rears, they 6x4? thx anyway, ill ask someone?

Dr. Zoidbergs last post is the one to read. In this he refers to the rears being '130mm'.

  • Author

yea but they are eliptical, they aint round, just look for a L x W, my local halfords had no idea.

It could be me. Are you talking about the standard fit RS rear speakers? If so, trust me they are round and the diameter is 13cm. Trust me on this one aswell, the drivers side is a swine to change.

Another bit of advice. Many years ago () Infinitys were the speaker of choice on this forum. (This was before everyone discovered Jabba, up to then we just wanted to make our stereos sound nicer.) I fitted Infinity in the front, so went to buy a smaller version for the back. What I hadn't realised is that whatever you buy for the rear, the cone must be flush or lower than the mounting. I hadn't considered this when buying speakers that have to be mounted from underneath so had to have another treck to Halfords to exchange them for something else.

many thanks for your advice , is it easy to find ones that fit ok at the rear?? im think of rockford ones at the front, no idea at the rear yet

The rears are bog-standard 13cm / 130mm and certainly NOT eliptical.

There's plenty of info about speakers on the site :)

Kenny, i replied to your PM about my Pioneers with full details, i suggest you use this as a starting point.

  • 4 weeks later...

Ok boys and girls, Rockford are the american competition stuff and really do kick ass. However if you want superior sound quality then put some Focal 165H in the front doors - Sextons for about

  • Author

will the grille still fit ove the speaker?

Yes they will, speak to Karl at Sextons 0161-877-3301, they did my vRS and will glady point you in the right direction for any queries, just tell them you know Nick with the VRS. I will take some snap shots and mail it to you if you like?
